Fire and Life Safety Specialist
Position Summary
Assists WCMC community in the development and
implementation of fire and life safety programs.
Develops and maintains fire safety and emergency
management plans, maintains and operates fire
alarm panels, provides OSHA emergency evacuation
and fire safety training, organizes and leads
drills and exercises, and inspects for fire
safety compliance. Assists personnel with
understanding of requirements for the effective
use of related plans, procedures, guidelines,
federal, state and local requirements and codes.
Develops program objectives, identifies
corrective action strategies and provides
periodic status reports to management. Develops
communications to the WCMC community on fire
safety and emergency management issues. Works
closely with other EHS staff to integrate fire
safety program implementation.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in fire safety, engineering,
protection or allied science discipline required.
At least five years experience in fire science,
emergency operations and/or emergency response
and management with at least three years in a
management/supervisory role required. Must have
strong working knowledge of federal, state and
local fire safety regulations and relevant codes.
Must be skilled in assessing and implementing
fire safety compliance programs and working with
a diverse clientele of facility managers and
building occupancies. Requires excellent oral
and written communication skills, including
training program delivery and program
documentation. Must be organized, capable of
working independently in a service environment
and handling multiple assignments. Must have the
ability to interact effectively and develop
cooperative working relationships with faculty,
staff, students, and regulatory-agency personnel.
Work experience in a university and/or hospital
setting is preferred. Must have all FDNY
Certificates of Fitness related to Fire Safety
before hire or obtain certifications within 6
months of employment.
Technology Skill Requirements
Must be competent in the use of computers
including Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint,
Access and email/internet programs.
Special Requirements
Participates in EHS Emergency Response program.
While on call, carries a cellular phone or pager
and responds to emergencies during non-business
hours.

safety equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Must

equipment, including negative-pressure

Biosafety Specialist
Position Summary
Develops and implements a comprehensive
biological safety program throughout all
research, clinical, and service areas that meets
NIH, CDC, OSHA and granting agency requirements.
Program includes recombinant DNA (rDNA) and
human/animal gene transfer; infectious agents and
biologically-derived toxins; and human tissues,
fluids, and cells/cell cultures. Serves on the
Institutional Biosafety Committee. Reviews and
approves protocols involving the use of
infectious agents and rDNA. Assists
investigators and staff with all matters related
to biosafety. Maintains database of
microorganisms handled and rDNA experiments being
conducted. Coordinates the acquisition of 'select
agents' by WCMC and performs required inspections
and training. Audits laboratories and work
practices and communicates findings to
management. Investigates accidents and incidents
involving biological agents and materials.
Develops and conducts educational programs for
faculty, staff and students to improve biological
safety.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in biology, microbiology,
cellular biology, infectious diseases or other
related laboratory science required. Master’s
degree preferred. Five years of increasingly
responsible experience in the area of biosafety
with demonstrated successful program
implementation results in a research and rDNA
environment required. Prefer knowledge and
experience with gene transfer research and
technologies and USDA APHIS control regulations.
Knowledgeable and practiced in: the recognition,
evaluation and control of biohazardous materials,
including handling, identification, properties,
storage and disposal; process hazard safety
review and its application to laboratory-based
operations; applicable laws, regulations, codes
and guidelines as related to laboratory
operations; the means of conducting
inspections/audits and issuing reports of
findings; the methodology for sampling and
monitoring contaminants in the laboratory
environment; knowledgeable in research laboratory
operations and procedures. Self-management skills
and characteristics needed to provide direction
and support for a complex technical program;
excellent written, oral, presentational and
programmatic skills; interact with and
effectively communicate regulations and
instructions to faculty, staff, students and the
public; enthusiasm for working in an integrated
team approach to interdisciplinary programs;
demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize and
successfully complete complex projects.

Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Safety and
Compliance Specialist, assists WCMC community

non-exempt technical areas as needed.
Minimum Requirements
High School Diploma required; bachelor’s degree
preferred; 1 year’s related experience in a mid
to large size organization required; or
completion of two year technical training
program in safety or related field. Must be
highly service oriented and have good
interpersonal, written and oral communication
skills. Must also have experience using
computers, including Microsoft Office
email/internet programs.
Special Requirements
Participates in EHS Emergency Response program on
a limited basis aiding senior staff. While on
call, carries a cellular phone or pager and
responds to assist with emergencies during
non-business hours.
