Acknowledging that most chemicals have hazards and need to be managed appropriately should also be part of your curriculum. The issue is whether or not you have the capability and will make sure that safe practices occur. Lack of money, facilities and expertise of the teacher may preclude a lot, but certainly not all, chemicals that have an OSHA standard. Obviously, you don't have air supplied respirators in a high school - so avoid those chemical that require them. But requiring gloves and N-95's isn't out of the question necessarily and could be an important lesson on real world management of risk. The last thing we need as ACS is to perpetuate and grow fear of chemicals. We should be promoting the responsible use of chemicals. Again, I think your local chemical companies can give you a hand.
