The University: California State University, Los Angeles, one of 23 campuses of the California State University system, was founded in 1947. The University is located at the eastern edge of the city of Los Angeles and adjacent to the western San Gabriel Valley, with more than 21,000 students reflecting the rich ethnic diversity of the area. The Position: Under the general supervision of the Director of Risk Management/Environmental Health and Safety, the incumbent will be responsible for: development, oversight, training and continuous improvement of the University Radiation Safety Program; management of key risk management/environmental health and safety related programs; support, assistance, training, and interpretation for all laboratory, instructional and Student Health Center personnel related to radiation, occupational safety and environmental control programs; coordination of the campus inspection program; participation in committees and working groups; development of policies and procedures specific to radiation, occupational safety and environmental control programs; coordination of construction related safety issues; operational and administrative duties in the absence of the director; direct supervision of the hazardous materials technician and other positions; and other related duties as assigned. Required Qualifications and Experience: A Bachelor's degree in physical or life science, nuclear/chemical engineering, environmental science or other related field from an accredited college or university. Must possess a minimum of three years of supervisory experience along with three years of progressively responsible experience in radiation safety directly related to the duties and responsibilities as a radiation safety officer as defined by the State of California Department of Health Services (DHS) at a university/college, industrial or regulatory agency setting; and direct experience in the administration of provisions under a Broad Scope B or C, or Specific Radioactive Materials License approved by the DHS or equivalent entity. A master's degree from an accredited college or university may substitute for two years of the required professional experience. The incumbent must possess an excellent understanding of regulatory requirements related to the purchase, handling, use, monitoring and disposal of radioactive substances; a command of California Code of Regulations Title 17 and 8, 10 CFR parts 20 and 30, and U.S. Department of Transportation regulations for the transport of radioactive materials; effective written, verbal and interpersonal skills; the ability to use software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint; work independently and within a committee framework; and the ability and/or interest in working in a multicultural/multiethnic environment. Compensation: Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. A comprehensive benefit package is provided.
