A reminder that good news depends on who's hearing it... - Ralph http://www.troyrecord.com/articles/2009/09/04/news/doc4aa13747a56bc2424671 59.txt The Troy Record (TroyRecord.com), Serving Troy and its surrounding communities No firefighters missed work from RPI fire fallout Friday, September 4, 2009 By Dave Canfield The Record TROY =97 None of the 15 firefighters sent to the hospital for testing following a Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute laboratory fire two months ago missed a full day of work. Fire officials had stressed the potential danger of chemical exposure from smoke that filled the Jonsson-Rowland Science Center during the June 29 fire, which injured the finger of a female undergraduate student. They were sent to Samaritan Hospital for medical testing and firefighters were brought in on overtime to fill their spots =97 both costs to taxpayers that fire officials pointed to when pushing for a so-called public safety fee from RPI. On July 1, two days after the fire, Fire Chief Tom Garrett said the firefighters were still =93out sick=94 and awaiting results. On Wednesday, he would not disclose the test results or how much time the firefighters missed =97 and thus needed to be replaced by other firefighters, likely at an overtime rate =97 citing medical privacy laws. He would say only that they are back to work. But it appears they never missed any time at all. =93I was informed by Chief Garrett that no firefighters missed work due to the incident nor were they admitted to the hospital,=94 Deputy Mayor Dan Crawley said. Uniformed Firefighters Association president Dave Paul said scheduling that consists of one day on followed by several days off likely accounted for the lack of days missed. The fire re-ignited a battle over staffing at the department=92s Bouton Road station, which serves RPI. Current staffing levels leave its ambulance and fire truck incapable of being in use at the same time. When Paul and others argued for RPI to aid the department financially, the school pledged to help in other ways but said it would pay no fee for emergency services.
