Stony Brook University Environmental Health & Safety is hosting: CHEMICAL REACTIVITY HAZARDS: Laboratory Scale Recognition & Control Workshop Presented by Dr. Neal Langerman, Advanced Chemical Safety When: Thursday, March 18, 2010 Time: 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM (lunch will not be provided) Where: Charles B. Wang Asian-American Center, room 101, Stony Brook University (campus map - http://www.stonybrook.edu/sb/maps.shtml) Cost: $85 (includes course material, light refreshments & parking validation stickers for off-campus participants) Description: The objective of the workshop is to provide participants with the knowledge and skill to screen processes for potential hazards, recognize when reactive hazards are present, and implement appropriate controls to reduce the risk of an incident associated with the hazards. Workshop attendees will review case studies of actual incidents and do screening examples in order to understand the screening and recognition process. Group discussions of control methods will allow participants to share their experiences and to evaluate methods for controlling reactivity risks. Control of chemical reactive hazards in laboratories is a topic that all lab researchers, Chemical Hygiene Officers or those with Hazardous Materials Response duties need additional training. The December 2008 death of a researcher at UCLA and the subsequent investigation and scrutiny of their lab safety program serves as a reminder that chemical hazards must not be underestimated. Chemical reactive hazards are also part of the OSHA Process Safety Management regulation. OSHA has a safety and health topic page for Chemical Reactivity Hazards with additional information (http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/reactivechemicals/index.html). This is the same workshop that is offered at the American Chemical Society annual meeting for $375! Cost to attend this workshop: $85 Registration is limited to 30 attendees. Registrations must be received by Feb. 19. No cancellations refunds after March 1, 2010. Parking validation stickers for the Visitor's Admin garage will be provided to off-campus attendees. TO REGISTER: Please complete this information & email to Kim Auletta (kim.auletta**At_Symbol_Here**stonybrook.edu). Provide State/RF account number. A signed form must be faxed/mailed to EH&S.
