We're located in Logan, Utah. My degree is Occupational Safety and Health management. Your university is under OSHA regulations. In fact your question falls under 29 CFR 1910.1450 , D. Components of a Chemical Hygiene Plan, Item 2. Chemical Procurement Distribution and Storage. (b) Stockrooms and storerooms. This regulation does not specifically state that stock rooms are to be locked; however, it does mention that chemicals should be separated by type and all stored chemicals should be checked periodically. It does mention the following that might pertain: "Stockrooms/storerooms should not be used as preparation or packaging areas, should be open during normal business hours, and should be controlled by one person." I hope this helps. Your state OSHA consultants can be reached at 406-444-6401. Your campus website lists Steve Larson as your university safety committee chair. His number is: 406-756-3821. I would get Steve involved. If an accident should happen, he would be involved in the reporting process. Take Care. Good luck with this. Cordially, L. Scott Williams
