us_pa: Haz-Mat Team Called To Poultry Plant
-
EXETER TWP., Pa. -- Police,
firefighters, hazardous materials teams, and emergency management
officials descended on the Mehadrin Kosher Poultry Plant in Exeter
Township, Berks County Tuesday evening.
An ammonia leak forced the company to evacuate 125
workers just before 7:00 p.m.
Six
people had to be taken to the hospital.
Company officials say there's only a limited amount of
ammonia on site.
"It's for
cooling purposes," said Paul Bridges, a Mehadrin employee. "It's a
refrigerant. It's used to refrigerate fueling systems in the
plant."
Exeter Township issued a
cease and desist order last week saying the plant was discharging too
much waste water, but a judge lifted that order Monday.

HENRYVILLE =97 The Clark
County Sheriff=92s Department closed two clandestine methamphetamine
labs and arrested three people, including a mother and son, in
Henryville on Monday for manufacturing the drug.
The
investigation led to the discovery of two separate labs that had been
operating off and on along the same street.
Investigators briefly searched both homes, but they had to
evacuate because the chemical odors were so strong that officers
reported experiencing temporary irritation of their respiratory systems.
They were all able to recover after going outside.
The
Indiana State Police Laboratory sent chemists and assistants to properly
package and dispose of the hazardous material. The materials to make
meth are considered extremely violent and combustible that specialists
are used to dismantle the labs.

bus depot turns out to be cocaine |
SALT LAKE
CITY =97 A small vial containing an unknown white substance created a
scare at a bus depot Tuesday.
While employees were initially worried about possible
anthrax, hazardous materials crews determined the unknown substance was
actually cocaine.
A Utah Transit Authority employee Monday night was
going through a bus that had just parked for the evening at the UTA's
depot near 200 South and 600 West when a vial about half the size of a
pinky finger was found, said Salt Lake fire spokesman Mark
Bednarik.
The employee put the vial in another bottle with the
intent of throwing it away. After talking with other employees and
thinking about it, however, UTA called emergency crews on
Tuesday.
After conducting several field tests, Bednarik said
investigators determined the white powdery substance wasn't a lethal
disease but rather an illegal drug.
Services at the bus station
were not disrupted.

us_pa: Chemical reaction blamed for Marjol site
fire
A chemical reaction between
rainwater and pelletized lime near hay bales apparently touched off a
small weekend fire at the Marjol Battery site in Throop, a spokeswoman
said Tuesday.
The fire was quickly extinguished by Throop
firefighters, and no lead-contaminated materials were involved, said
Lisa Ayers of Advanced GeoSciences, which represents site owner Gould
Electronics.
Borough Fire Chief Eric Hartshorn said firefighters
who responded Saturday about 3 a.m. found some hay bales burning, with
the flames threatening an excavator. The fire was put out before it
spread to the machinery.
The fire occurred "nowhere near" the containment area
where lead-contaminated soil and battery casings have been consolidated
as part of the site cleanup, Chief Hartshorn said.
