Chemical Hygiene Officer(CHO)/Laboratory Safety Officer (LSO)

Department: Campus Security/Facilities

Reports To: Reports to Director of Campus Security and works closely with Chemistry Department Chair

Essential Responsibilities: The Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) is oversees procurement, monitors use, and ensures proper disposal of all chemicals on campus, according to OSHA, EPA, and other federal, state, and municipal government regulations and insurance requirements.

Oversees campus chemical hygiene plan and compliance with OSHA Laboratory Standard. Assists with campus hazard communication plan.

The Laboratory Safety Officer (LSO) oversees laboratory safety in all laboratories (includes science and non-science laboratories and workshops) through regular audits.

Trains faculty, staff, and teaching assistants in proper laboratory safety procedures. As both CHO and LSO, maintains records such as student safety contracts, MSDS forms, laboratory safety inspection reports, safety training records, and documentation of compliance with chemical storage and disposal regulations.

Issues regular reports on campus compliance with chemical handling regulations and safety protocols.

Essential Qualifications: A Bachelor=92s degree in chemistry, master=92s degree preferred.

Familiarity with OSHA regulations pertaining to college-level laboratory safety and laboratory management; OSHA and Department of Homeland Security regulations and right-to-know policies pertaining to chemical inventory and labeling; and EPA regulations pertaining proper storage of chemicals and disposal of hazardous waste. As CHO and LSO, must be willing to seek training and/or certification and attend relevant conferences to stay abreast of new requirements.

Previous experience working with others (including students) in a laboratory setting. A familiarity with college-level teaching laboratories. Strong organizational skills, and good oral and written communications skills.

Excellent time management and scheduling skills.

Stability - a willingness to make a long-term commitment to the CHO/LM position. Understanding of and personal commitment to North Park=92s mission of Christian higher education.
