finishing plant. Firefighters are concerned about what they're
breathing.
Deputy
Fire Chief Randall Zingler says the fire is in an area where there are
large vats of acid and the ventilation system is
affected.

The
Lehigh County HazMat team along with other state environmental agencies
mopped up 39,000 pounds of concentrated apple juice in Lower Saucon
Township after a tractor-trailer carrying the sweet beverage overturned
on Route 33 Wednesday evening, police say.
No one
was injured in the crash that prompted a more than three-hour cleanup,
according to a Pennsylvania State Police report.

back open after being closed most of the day.
A semi

inside.

security at all its refineries following the fire at the borough pit in

A fire has engulfed a chemical plant in the eastern
Chinese city of Nanjing as the country suffers from many fatal
industrial accidents.

PORT ST.
LUCIE =97 Several thousand gallons of a diluted blend of reacted lime
and calcium carbonate spilled after a tanker truck rolled over Wednesday
morning, shutting down an intersection for hours as crews worked to
clean up the tawny colored material, officials said.
=93It is
not in the least environmentally damaging or dangerous,=94 said Donna
Rhoden, safety and public affairs manager for Port St. Lucie
Utilities.
Rhoden said the truck had been northbound on Airoso
Boulevard about 9:30 a.m. and was turning right onto St. James Drive to
continue north. The city-contracted truck was hauling a diluted blend of
reacted lime and calcium carbonate =97 a byproduct of a process at a
city water treatment plant =97 to a drying bed or facility. She said
several thousand gallons spilled, though said it was less than 6,000
gallons.

Around 9:45 a.m. this morning, Oct. 20, a chemical
reaction caused a small fire in a second floor science class at Deer
Park Junior Senior High School.

and one teacher in the class at the time. No one was injured. The fire
was contained to classroom and a fire extinguisher was used to put out
the fire.

MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee Fire Department crews and hazmat
teams came to the scene of a two-alarm fire at a metal plating company
that has dangerous chemicals.
The fire happened at Artistic Plating on the corner of

at about 1:40 a.m. Thursday morning.
The company does
electroplating and metal finishes. They use lots of chemicals,
including acid.

Central Oregon no longer has it's own local Hazmat
team. So when a persistently strange smell started coming from this
neighborhood on Edgewater Street, a team was brought in from Salem.
While local police and fire shut down the road.
Hazmat teams gear up, putting on protective orange
suits to investigate a smell that caused neighbors to call for
help.
"Initial crews basically
described the smell as used fireworks. So kind of that either a
phosphorous or sulfur smell."
The Bend
fire department looked for the source but found nothing. After 45
minutes, they make the call to the nearest hazmat team in
Salem.
"It was here for a long
time. The smell was here for a long time, which is not
normal."
The neighborhood was not
evacuated but Edgwater and 5th Street are closed. People near by asked
to stay inside as the careful investigation gets
underway.
"We do what's called a
level-A entry, which is the top, the highest level of protection,
because we don't know what the source is."
With specialized equipment, teams of two tested areas
around the house where the smell seemed to be coming. They go in,
continuing to search, but in the end.
"We haven't been able to pinpoint the cause of the
odor."
About 8-hours after the
initial call, extensive testing complete, the hazmat team gave the all
clear.
The strange odor, gone and
still a mystery.

MIDDLETOWN =97 The clear substance found near the
Wilcox apartment complex last week has been identified as hydroflouric
acid, a highly corrosive liquid and contact poison, officials said
Wednesday.
Shortly before noon on Oct. 14, officials received a
911 call after three members of the complex=92s maintenance staff found
a 10-gallon bucket filled with clear liquid while cleaning the banks of
a nearby brook.
Eyewitness reports revealed that some of the liquid
spilled into the brook, which leads to a pond, and created a vapor-like
cloud which could be seen for several hours thereafter. The substance
reacted with the moisture in the air to create the cloud, said state
Department of Environmental Protection spokeswoman Cyndy
Chanaca.
The reason why the container was there remains
unknown. However, it appeared to be an =93old historic drum=94 dumped
there years ago, Chanaca said. It has since been sent by the DEP to an
approved disposal facility for discarding.

Hazmat
crews are trying to determine what led to an apparent fuel leak into the
Susquehanna River.
Emergency crews responded to a call Tuesday night
about an odd-smelling slick on the river. Authorities believe it was
some kind of fuel, possibly diesel. Workers deployed booms to isolate
the slick.
Harrisburg fire Captain Mick Shrauder tells WHTM-TV
that it's unclear if the slick was a result of a leak or came from a
storm drain.
Harrisburg's water supply was not affected, but the
water plant in Steelton farther down the river was shut down as a
precaution.
