An important responsibility of this position will be the supervision/mentoring of all lab-safety staff in EHS. It is an exciting time at WCMC. We are a 22-person department that covers environmental health and safety for all educational, clinical, research, and administrative operations. Weill Cornell Medical College (WCMC) seeks a highly motivated individualthat provides leadership and guidance in the development and implementation of laboratory safety programs; supervises and cross-coordinates staff involvement in project areas impacting laboratory safety programs; oversees laboratory safety team implementing laboratory health and safety programs for the WCMC laboratory community including safety plans, education and outreach, hazard risk assessment and signage programs, site and building inspections; reviews and coordinates laboratory safety manuals, guidance documents and procedures to ensure consistency with standards and service; supervises laboratory safety staff; educates, trains and mentors staff in proper and timely completion of work activities; recommends hires, assigns and reviews work; administers the annual laboratory safety inspection program including coordinating with Department Administrators to determine the Principal Investigators and laboratories associated with the inspection; coordinates reporting and communication of laboratory inspection findings and corrective actions to the Departments and Principal Investigators; oversees the FDNY laboratory inspection program and ensures resultant violations are addressed by the Department and laboratory within the appropriate timeframes and required documentation is returned to the FDNY substantiating compliance with the violations; responds as part of emergency team to hazardous material spills, gas leaks and other indoor air quality issues in the laboratories; develops and maintains related EHS Program Manuals including the Laboratory Chemical Hygiene Plan and associated EHS inventories, Health and Safety Door signs, Research Safety Checklists and auditing laboratories; develops strategies to minimize the hazard or risk; provides in-service training to lab personnelon various components of plan; conducts laboratory chemical safety-based accident investigations; manages the college=92s high hazard operating procedure program; develops and maintains related EHS program manuals and procedures including updates on high hazard operating procedures and related sections of Laboratory Chemical hygiene plan; identifies chemical hazards and risks; manages the research safety checklist program including assessment, verification and approval of checklist; coordinates communication to Principal Investigators identifying deficiencies and required corrective actions; identifies safety hazard and non-compliance issues in the laboratory and works with Principal Investigator or other senior laboratory staff to correct issues; performs other job related duties as required.

 

Requirements:
Bachelor=92s degree in science, engineering, environmental management or related field and at least five years of experience, including three years ofsupervisory experience required; Master=92s degree in science, engineering, environmental management or related field or Industrial hygiene and Industrial Hygienist Certification highly desired; proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required; candidate must be able to lift safety equipment weighing up to fifty pounds and move fifty five gallon drums; candidate must be able to utilize respiratory protection equipment including negative-pressure respirators and self-contained breathing apparatus; excellent organization and communication skills are required.
