ATLANTA (AP) - Authorities say an employee of the Fulton County Medical Examiner's office has been taken to a hospital as a precaution after being exposed to a spilled chemical.
WXIA-TV reports (http://on.11alive.com/W7XQKY) that the worker was cleaning slides Tuesday morning when she spilled some of the xylene she was using.
Paul Desamours, operations manager for the office, said the woman showered and was decontaminated, but was still taken to Grady Memorial Hospital as a precaution.
4 of the five employees in the building at the time were evacuated as fire officials used fans to clear the office of possible fumes.

RENO, NV - Hazardous materials crews are at an industrial building in north Reno, dealing with an acid spill.
There are no reports of injuries, but the building on Security Circle, off Old 395, has been evacuated. There was a small fire that was quickly extinguished.
The business is Kappes, Cassiday and Associates, which deals with mining chemicals. Employees have been sent home for the day.

BOISE -- Firefighters helped extinguish a potentially dangerous fire at a Boise automotive shop Tuesday morning.
That's because a 55-gallon drum of methanol -- an industrial alcohol used in antifreeze and other solvents -- sparked and caused the shop's employees to evacuate.
The fiery accident happened at Einstein's Oilery at 8488 West Overland Road shortly before 9 a.

A life sciences building on the Boston University campus has reopened after a graduate student working in a laboratory spilled a liter of an industrial solvent, prompting a brief evacuation today but causing no injuries, fire department officials said.
The student knocked over the container of solvent on the seventh floor of the 12-story Life Science and Engineering Building about 11 a.m., said Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald said.
The chemical, decahydronaphthalene, is a liquid used in the making of paint and other industrial solvents.

Baton Rouge Fire Department haz-mat units stopped an ammonia leak at the Reddy Ice Facility, located at 1140 Myrtle Street within 15 minutes, spokesman Curt Monte told NOLA.com Thursday evening.

Around 3:15 p.m., the fire department received a call about the pungent smell, Monte said.
"Haz-mat units arrived on the scene, went inside the facility and stopped the leak," he said. "Right now everything is safe. We're just waiting for the area to clear out." Firefighters evacuated children from the St. Francis Xavier Catholic School, two houses near the school and closed off streets in a two-block radius from the facility.
Monte said anhydrous ammonia, the official name of the leaking substance, could cause respiratory distress. There are no reports of any injuries.

LONG VIEW N.C. - Several area emergency departments responded to a chlorine gas leak at the Long View Water Treatment Plant on Monday.
"Water treatment operators were changing out a large pressurized chlorine tank used in the partial filtration area of the plant when a small leak was discovered in the tank," according to Eric Shepherd, Chief of the fire department.
Long View Fire Department, Catawba County EMS, Hazmat and Emergency Management teams gathered quickly after an alert of the leak was received by the fire department at 9:10 a.m., said Shepherd.
"When chlorine gas comes into contact with water, there is a chemical reaction that produces hydrochloric acid," said Karyn Yaussy, Catawba County Emergency Management Coordinator. "It is a serious situation, and got our attention."

A hundred chemical plants, construction sites and factories in Beijing have closed temporarily or cut back production as the authorities scramble for ways to curb the worst air pollution in years.
Air pollution figures improved yesterday and officials said they expected the thick smog in the capital would be dispelled by a cold snap in the next few days.
The level of health-threatening PM2.5 particles, smaller than 2.5 microns, was between 200 and 400 micrograms per cubic metre yesterday, the Beijing Municipal Environmental Monitoring Centre said, down from 500 on Sunday. The US embassy's pollution monitoring service said PM2.5 readings yesterday were higher than 300 micrograms per cubic metre. Its readings reached 886 on Saturday.

ndustrial chemicals that leaked into a river, leading to water supplies being cut last week to 30,000 residents in suburban Shanghai, exposed faults in the supervision of chemicals' production and transportation, an expert said.
The leak, caused when a valve being used to control discharge from a tanker to another vessel was left open, also highlighted low access to the chemical manufacturing industry, the expert added.
"It should not be as easy as a company paying some money, and then getting a plot in a chemical enterprise park and starting production," said Dai Xingyi, a professor at the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering at Fudan University in Shanghai.
"Proper supervision should be put in place in the key points of chemicals' production and transportation," he said.
Large amounts of styrene Ñ a chemical hazardous to the intestines, kidneys and respiratory systems if ingested Ñ leaked into a river on Thursday in Jinshan district, home to the city's chemical industry park.

CUBA CITY, WIS. (KWWL) -
A chemical fire lead emergency teams to evacuate a neighborhood in Smelser Township, Wis., on Sunday night.
The fire occurred at 9:30 p.m. at a woodworking shop at 1323 Church Rd. in Georgetown, Wis., according to the Cuba City Fire Department.
The shop contained large quantities of woodworking chemicals in 55-gallon drums. These containers exploded, prompting the responding fire departments and Lancaster Hazmat to evacuate six households due to potentially dangerous chemical fumes.
Freezing roads hampered efforts to bring water from Cuba City to the scene. The Grant County Highway Department was dispatched to treat the roadways used by the emergency teams.

Ten fire tenders tried to control the fire for nearly five hours. All the goods kept inside the factory were reduced to cinders in the blaze .

The Panama City Police Department is investigating an incident where a subject received injuries from his attempts to manufacture methamphetamine (meth).

Moates was transported to a local hospital with severe chemicals burns over most of his upper body including his face and was having difficulty breathing.
Investigators learned that Moates was attempting to manufacture meth in the bathroom of his residence located across the street at 3702 W. 22nd Plaza when the cooking vessel exploded. Moats exited the residence seeking help for his chemical burns from neighbors.
