ORINDA -- An Orinda resident who lit a cigarette while working with an unknown chemical outside his home Sunday afternoon was badly burned, police said.
Police and firefighters were called at 1:36 p.m. to 12 Orchard Road for a report that a man had been burned with some type of chemical, said Sgt. Howard Shiells.
A preliminary investigation revealed the man was using a substance believed to be paint thinner, lit the cigarette, then sustained serious burns to his hands while working outside of the home, Shiells said.
The man was transported to a local hospital to be treated for moderate-to-major injuries, police said.

GUJRANWALA: A Technical College student was injured on Saturday in an explosion during an experiment. Rescue officials said that Zeeshan was injured when a bottle of acid, lying close to him, broke. The fumes, they said, reacted with the solution in the apparatus he was holding, resulting in a secondary explosion. He was taken to Civil Hospital, where doctors said that his face and hands had been burned. They said he was now out of danger

A blast occurred at a chemical plant in East China's Shandong province on Saturday, but casualties remain unknown.
The blast occurred around 11 am at Yongxin Chemical Plant in Boxing county, located about 150 km northeast of the provincial capital Jinan, sources with the local government said.
A preliminary investigation failed to turn up casualties at the scene, the sources said, adding that firefighters have rushed to the site to carry out rescue work.
It was initially determined that a chimney exploded at the plant, which mainly handles petrochemical production.

A chemical reaction at a Dunedin school's pool has sparked an emergency services callout, with a man requiring medical treatment.
The Fire Service and St John ambulance were called to Portobello School at 9:50am today after two chemicals, one of them a type of chlorine, were mixed at the school's pool building and began giving off fumes.
Fire crews in protective clothing were at the scene investigating and diluting the chemicals.
A Fire Service spokesman said one man was treated at the scene.

CREWS GAIN HANDLE ON AMMONIA LEAK IN LONG BEACH

LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) Ñ An ammonia leak inside a cold storage facility in Long Beach prompted a hazardous-materials team to respond as well as the U.S. Coast Guard.
Authorities say they were alerted to the leak by a passerby who smelled ammonia about 4:56 a.m. Saturday.
By 8 a.m., a Hazmat team had entered the facility and closed the valves of the leaking 4,000-gallon diffuser tank.
The incident forced the closure of several surrounding blocks.

TACOMA, Wash. Ñ A hazmat team was called in Friday night after a reported chemical spill at Pacific Lutheran University, said an official with Central Pierce Fire and Rescue.
The incident happened at the campus' science building where security guards spotted the spill.
After crews responded to the scene, the building was evacuated.
According to Randy Stephens of CPFR, the chemical spill and odor was discovered in a storage room in the building.
The hazmat team was not able to locate the spill.

BLADENBORO, N.C. Ñ A train carrying ammonia derailed in Bladenboro on Saturday afternoon, forcing 300 to 400 people to temporarily leave their homes.
No one was injured after 10 of the 105 CSX rail cars overturned around 3:30 p.m., about 40 miles south of Fayetteville, according to the Bladen County Sheriff's Office.
A hazmat team responded after learning that one of the overturned rail cars was carrying ammonia.

HOUSTON -
A shelter-in-place was ordered at a southeast Harris County chemical plant because of a chemical leak at a nearby facility on Friday.
LynondellBasell officials said employees at the Bayport Polymers Plant in the 12000 Bay Area Boulevard were told to shelter in place as a precaution.
According to AkzoNobel plant officials, there was a release of pivaloyl chloride to the chemical sewer at it's facility in the 12900 block of Baypark about 6:45 a.m. That resulted in the decomposition of the product and three people were exposed to the chemical. They were all taken to a hospital as a precaution.
AkzoNobel ordered a shelter-in-place at its facility, but it was lifted about 8 a.m. The shelter-in-place at LyondellBasell remained active at 11:30 a.m.

SKYVIEW FRESHMAN SENTENCED FOR CHEMICAL INCIDENT

A Skyview High School freshman was sentenced Friday to 15 days in Clark County Juvenile Detention for bringing a toxic mixture of chemicals to school on Jan. 24 and exposing other students and staff.
Nine people, including two adults and seven teenagers, had to be treated at Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center for respiratory distress and were discharged the same day.
"It was supposed to be a joke," said Deputy Prosecutor Rick Olson. "He was trying to be funny. He wasn't trying to hurt anyone. Sometimes, kids do stupid things, and that was one of them."
Court Commissioner Terry Vetter also sentenced the boy, 14, to an additional seven days in detention for selling marijuana in a separate Dec. 10 case.
The boy pleaded guilty to third-degree assault and reckless endangerment for the chemical exposure, and to delivery of a controlled substance for the marijuana sale.

HOMESTEAD, Fla. (WSVN) -- Five people were transported to the hospital after inhaling chemical fumes while working on a jet at a South Florida air base.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units responded to Homestead Air Reserve Base Friday afternoon after five people complained of chest pains.
According to officials, work was being done on a F-16 jet on the runway when they started to have trouble breathing.

The state Hazardous Materials Team responded to Sohier Road on Wednesday morning for a fire at a chemical storage unit. No chemicals caught fire as a result of the incident, which was caused by improper storage of rags used to clean up solution of potassium permanganate, according to Beverly Fire investigators.

Crews working in close coordination with CPI employees were able to gain access to the storage unit and use a hose line to extinguish burning materials that were stored inside the container. In addition to a solution of potassium permanganate, rags and buckets used for clean up were stored in the container.
"The fire involved the rags and a bucket. At no time were the containers of the stored chemical involved in the fire," said Peter O'Connor, Beverly Fire Department deputy chief.

The container is owned by Shaw Environmental but kept on the property for ongoing operations at that site. It had two fire suppression systems installed including a dry chemical system that activated keeping the fire from intensifying before firefighters arrived and a sprinkler system that did not activate because the fire did not get hot enough to activate a sprinkler head.

WSU STUDENT RECEIVES SEVERE BURN IN CHEMICAL FIRE

A Washington State University student was hospitalized with severe burns Friday afternoon following a chemical fire at Fulmer Hall at Washington State University.
Firefighters from Pullman and Whitman County Rural District 12 were called just before 2:30 p.m. to respond to a report of a fire and injured people on the fifth floor of the chemistry building, according to a Pullman Fire Department media release.
Witnesses reportedly told WSU Police and firefighters that they had been conducting an experiment with hexane, a hydrocarbon, during most of the day.
"As the experiment progressed, they doubled the chemical and the amount of electricity used in the experiment," the media release states.
Students reportedly tried using a fire extinguisher and closing a vent hood but were unable to put out the fire by themselves. Firefighters extinguished the blaze upon arrival.
According to Pullman Fire Capt. James Turpin, one male student was transported to Pullman Regional Hospital with third-degree burns on his left leg. Another student, a pregnant woman, fell backward out of her chair when the fire erupted but did not appear to have any physical injuries. She told authorities she intended to take her own vehicle to seek medical attention.

CLINTON Ñ A soy oil fire Wednesday caused an estimated $70,000 in damage to the Clinton County Bio Energy Plant.
Clinton Fire Department Battalion Chief Frederick Roling said firefighters were sent to the plant, located at 5640 44th Ave. S., at 4:04 p.m. for a possible fire on the ground floor of the plant.
The first firefighters on the scene reported heavy black smoke coming from behind the office building and flames were visible on the ground.
The fire was located in the process area, but outside of all the buildings, Roling said.
Soy oil had caught fire in the piping of the process area of the plant, he added.
The employees of the plant were trying to extinguish the fire before the fire department was called, he said. However, Strong winds prevented the employees from getting the fire under control.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in about 20 minutes, Roling said.

OHIO REFINERY FIRE QUICKLY CONTROLLED

OREGON, Ohio (AP) - Officials say an overnight fire at a northwest Ohio refinery was quickly contained.
The Blade newspaper (http://bit.ly/XlOrjs ) reports that an explosion triggered the blaze just before midnight Wednesday at the Toledo Refining Co. in Oregon.
The fire was reported in a unit that converts petroleum crude oils into gasoline, ethylene, and other products.
There were no injuries, and no air quality issues have been detected inside or outside the refinery.
