Nanotechnology: Revolutionizing Occupational Safety & Health

Nanotechnology has revolutionized industry and commerce both nationally and internationally. It already exists in hundreds of consumer products like tennis balls, cars, refrigerators, cameras and cosmetics.
Legislators, scientific researchers and industry leaders struggle daily with the unknown risks of nanotechnology and its tantalizing public health benefits, so that someday nanotechnology can benefit the public health field with limited associated risks. Nanotechnology has a lot of potential within the medical field in terms of potential cures and new methods for early presympomatic diagnosis to prevent disease. Exploring these items will redefine the meaning of health and disability for insurance, return to work programs and legal guidelines. This will force us to rethink the role of occupational health, offering opportunities to expand the field but also offering the field's greatest challenges.
Professor Feitshans will define nanotechnology, provide an overview of nanotechnology applications in industry, explore future avenues for nanomedicine, discuss the need for regulation and and the impact nanotechnology will have on society in general.
Learning Objectives
* To provide an overview of current developments in nanotechnology that impact occupational health services, occupational medicine and workplace health.
* To offer professionals the opportunity to ask questions about these developments.
* To offer professionals the opportunity to think about these developments from the standpoint of whether they will change safety engineering, and if so whether those changes will be for the better.
* To offer professionals the opportunity to learn about how to participate in the legislative and regulatory process surrounding these changes.
* To provide some basic data about disability laws that will be impacted by nanotechnology and nanomedicine.

About the Speaker
Ilise L. Feitshans, JD, ScM
Ilise L Feitshans, JD, ScM, currently serves as a visiting scientist at the University of Lausanne Institute for Work and Health, and as a doctoral candidate in International Relations in Geneva Switzerland. Previously, Feitshans was the Acting Director of the Legislative Drafting Research Fund at the Columbia University School of Law in New York City. As a bilingual lawyer, she has also worked on U.S. Supreme Court cases about occupational health.
Feitshans has a Masters of Science in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. Her current studies address laws that protect the universal human right to health, by regulating emerging risks from nanotechnology. Her research, "Forecasting Nano Law: Risk Management Protecting Public Health Under International Law" has been awarded the Alice Hamilton Fellowship for a woman studying international health law at the Geneva School of Diplomacy.
Feitshans served on the U.S. Department of Energy Beryllium Rulemaking Advisory Commission and as Coordinatrice for the ILO Encyclopaedia of Occupational Health and Safety 5th edition at the United Nations, Geneva Switzerland. Feitshans served as co-instructor at the 2011 International Nanotechnology Conference in Boston. She has written two books and produced three safety and health videos. She is a member of the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States. In 2011, Feitshans was honored as one of ASSE's top 100 women in SH&E
