A chemical spill occurred on March 20 at the University of Colorado, Boulder. The incident did not result in any serious injuries, but the campus' Engineering Center was evacuated and four students were evaluated by the local hazmat team.
Another chemical spill, involving titanium tetrachloride, occurred at Colorado College on April 10. The incident prompted the treatment of 13 students, the hospitalization of custodian Steve Burt and the temporary closing of three blocks of Nevada Avenue.
Several members of Public Safety revealed UCCS has multiple plans to prevent a similar incident from occurring on campus.
According to Cynthia Norton, the hazardous materials specialist at UCCS, any person who handles chemicals on campus is required to undergo training, either through physical classes or online training.
The online training for the research labs consists of more than 145 PowerPoint slides that cover topics ranging from proper labeling of chemicals to emergency procedures.
Advanced students conducting research must then score a minimum of 80 percent on an online test to be allowed to handle potentially hazardous material.
Additionally, all students enrolled in science classes with a lab portion, primarily in chemistry and biology, must complete lab safety training and testing on Blackboard within the first three to four weeks of classes.
"Training is an important aspect. You want to be as proactive as possible to avoid having to be reactive," said Ron Honn, Environmental Health and Safety manager as well as the campus fire marshal.

Navi Mumbai, Apr 14: Crores of rupees worth chemicals went up in air on Saturday night in a major fire that engulfed a cosmetics factory in MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation) industrial estate at Taloja here.
Three parts of the Chemspac chemical plant were gutted in the fire which brought about huge explosion of drums containing chemicals.
Twelve fire tenders reached the spot to douse the blaze. Firefighters spread water and foam on nearby Asian Paints and Aftotech chemical plants to prevent the fire from spreading.
Fire tenders had to be requisitioned from Panvel, ONGC, Kalamboli and SIDCO to help in fighting the blaze.

A worker died Friday after breathing hydrogen sulfide fumes while cleaning large-diameter pipes at a wastewater treatment plant Thursday at the Port of Tampa.
Officials say seven employees of Lanzo Lining, Inc. were cleaning the 96-inch pipes at the Howard F. Curren Advanced Wastewater treatment plant when hydrogen sulfide fumes appeared inside a sewer pipe.
Two workers inside the pipe were overtaken by fumes.
Two other workers went into the pipe to help their co-workers, when they too were overcome by fumes. The remaining workers attempted to render aid to the other four, but were also affected by the fumes.
Tampa Fire Rescue responded to the scene and transported a total of seven workers to Tampa General Hospital for medical treatment.

NEWARK -- An employee at a lumber company in Newark was treated at a hospital Friday morning after a drum containing an unidentified chemical was knocked over by a forklift, an Alameda County fire spokeswoman said.
The substance in the 5-gallon container was unknown to workers at Hulbert Lumber, 37500 Cedar Blvd., said Alameda County fire spokeswoman Aisha Knowles. The container was not labeled.
A forklift driver was moving items from a storage room about 9 a.m. when he accidentally tipped over two containers, knocking the lid off one, she said.
A small amount of liquid was spilled and two employees tried to clean it up, but one fainted and was taken to the hospital. Eleven other employees evacuated the business, but the evacuation order was lifted about 1 p.m. and they returned to work, Knowles said.
The man who was taken to the hospital was treated and released and no one else was injured, she said.
The Alameda County hazardous materials crew tested the liquid and sent it to a lab for further testing. It should be identified in the coming days, she said.

Hazardous materials were expected to be cleaned-up Friday by a Minnesota state-certified clean-up company at the Crow Wing County Landfill, Brainerd Fire Chief Kevin Stunek said.
Stunek said the Brainerd Fire Department was notified Thursday that there were some possible hazardous materials at the landfill. Stunek said after conducting an investigation and consulting with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and a state duty officer, it was found that Wausau Paper placed some chemicals in the trash that were transported to the landfill. Stunek said it was a 20-pound bag of a powdery chemical that must have ruptured that caused the fire. Stunek said the hazardous chemicals were contained in a 10-foot area space and that the public was not in any danger.

A string of unheeded warning signs, missteps and lost opportunities spanned the decade leading up to last summer's disastrous fire at Chevron's Richmond refinery, according to the company's own investigation into the blaze.
In an 80-page report released Friday, Chevron also acknowledged it had mishandled the crude-oil pipeline leak that led to the Aug. 6 blaze - failing to recognize that the pipe's rupture could widen and spark a flash fire. The company said it would make dramatic changes in its training, crude-oil unit operations and emergency response.

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa ŅA hazmat crew was called to a family medicine and urgent care clinic in West Des Moines Friday morning.
"We have several patients with minor exposures that we have been transporting to the hospital," said David Edgar, assistant chief of West Des Moines EMS.
Iowa Health officials reported that 14 employees were affected by the fumes from a spilled chemical.
"Some coughing that took place, nothing severe. We did have one person that's having some vomiting," said Edgar.
West Des Moines Fire Marshal Mike Whitsell said about 8 ounces of the chemical phenol was spilled, which is considered a large spill for this type of chemical.
Phenol and its vapors are corrosive to the eyes, skin and the respiratory tract in concentrated amounts. In small amounts, it's used to treat a number of conditions.

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, Ky. - They heard a loud crash, saw a plume of smoke rising and headed toward their homes, then they saw Hazmat crews stepping down their street.
Neighbors say it's only natural to ask questions, but says those questions didn't get answers. Just after 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon on Cairo Road in McCracken County, a truck pulling two 1,000 gallon tanks of anhydrous ammonia was hit by another truck.
The tanks tipped over, one of them leaked the deadly chemical into the community.
They feel like they were ignored and they want to know why.
The emergency management director says he feels like yesterday's response was a successful one but says Hazmat crews made a mistake by not communicating well with the very people they were supposed to protect.

COLORADO COLLEGE RESUMES CLASSES, INVESTIGATES CHEMICAL SPILL

A custodian who helped a professor open a can of titanium tetrachloride in the basement of a Colorado College building suffered the most from exposure to the harmful chemical, Chemistry Professor Nathan Bower said Thursday.
Machinist Steve Burt remained hospitalized Thursday with breathing difficulties but was in stable condition at a Denver hospital, said Bower, who was not in the building during the incident.
The college is investigating what caused Wednesday's incident, Communications Director Jane Turnis said, adding that she was convinced all security measures were observed by staff and faculty.
Bower said the lid of the chemical container may have gathered moisture through its seal, which reacted with the titanium tetrachloride, making it extremely volatile.
"The problem was not how the chemical was stored, but rather how the container was opened," Bower said.
Colorado Springs Fire Lt. Stacy Billapando said the container had been taken down to a custodian who assisted in opening it. Bower said the container was drilled open, apparently causing pressure to build as moisture reacted with the chemical.
Seven staff members and six students were rescued from Olin Hall and sent to the hospital, Turnis said. Twelve people were treated Wednesday and released.

The Lethridge Fire Departments hazardous waste team evacuated everyone from the YMCA and the civic ice arena after a suspicious chemical was found in a nearby dumpster."There was an unconfirmed leakage and the hazmat team had to respond. For safety sake they closed the YMCA and are not allowing anyone on the property,"says Tabitha Jensen an employee of the YMCA.
The call was made by a city of Lethbridge employee after doing a routine garbage pick -up. The employee told 9-11 that he was experiencing symptoms of burning eyes and was dizzy."It looks like there was something disposed off in the dumpster behind the YMCA and when the dump. when the solid waste guy came to unload dumpster there was some vapor that omitted that caused the driver to be dizzy,"says Jesse Kurtz the deputy fire chief.
