FLINT -- The Flint Area Narcotics Group (FANG) confirms the explosion was a result of a meth lab. Police say they found chemicals and equipment in the apartment consistent with what is needed to make the drug.
"It exploded in the bathroom and blew the wall literally out of this residence. Usually what happens is that a small pinhole will develop and everything will leak out and a fire will start," said FANG Lt. Patrick Richard.
Members of FANG investigating the second story explosion found evidence that is ordinarily harmless, but put together is a ticking time bomb.
"You can go buy everything you need to make a meth lab in a Meijer right now or Walmart it doesn't matter," said Richard.

MOUNT ISA IN LOCKDOWN AFTER EXPLOSION IN ACID TANK

MOUNT Isa is in lockdown after an explosion in an acid tank near a mine sent a plume of smoke over the city.
Police are urging all Mount Isa's 22,000 residents to remain inside with their doors and windows closed following a minor explosion near the Mount Isa mine about 6.30pm.
It is believed a tank containing chemicals at the acid plant exploded creating a plume of noxious smoke.
There were no injuries. The incident is not considered suspicious.
Residents are advised to stay inside until further notice.

A 79-year-old man suspected of mixing chemicals used in fireworks at his Mqabba home was last night fighting for his life in hospital after an explosion.
Police sources said he may have been mixing chemicals used in ground fireworks
Police sources said Nicholas Ghigo may have been mixing chemicals used in gúiggúifogu, ground fireworks, which had been his and his brothers' passion since childhood.
Police said in a statement the "explosion" happened at around 1.30pm in Parish Street.
Mr Ghigo suffered burns in his hands, feet and chest before managing to escape the blaze and staggering to the police station next door for help. He was subsequently rushed to hospital.
He had already been injured in a similar incident in 1975, suffering burns to 32 per cent of his body while mixing colours.

At approximately 1 p.m. Monday the science building at Adelphi University was evacuated after a suspected hazardous material incident.
According to university officials, the Department of Public Safety received a call from an Adelphi professor who stated that during a class in the science building there had been a hazardous material incident. The building was evacuated and the Garden City Fire Department and Nassau County Fire Marshal's office responded to the scene.
At approximately 2:30 p.m. the fire marshal's Hazmat Unit determined that the incident had been properly cleared, university officials told Patch, and that all occupants could return to the building.
According to a witness at the scene, shortly after the building was cleared, emergency crews were recalled to the scene for several people suffering from a burning sensation in their eyes.

EL CAJON, Calif. - Authorities blocked off several streets in El Cajon Monday evening after a car involved in a collision had suspicious materials inside it, officials said.
Heartland Fire Department responded to the crash around 7 p.m. on West Chase and South Johnson Avenue and the crew discovered Tannerite, an aluminum powder-based explosive used primarily as a target for firearms practice, in the back of the vehicle, a fire dispatcher said. Hazardous materials crews were called to the scene to dispose of the materials.
It is legal to own Tannerite, City of El Cajon spokeswoman Monica Zech said.
One of the drivers involved in the collision was transported to a local hospital.

A Marietta resident has been identified as the man who died after what was described as a "flash fire" at a natural gas facility Thursday in Tyler County, W.Va., The Associated Press reported.
Bruce Phipps, 56, of Marietta, died late Friday night, according to the Tyler County Sheriff's Office. He was one of three workers who were taken to the West Penn Burn Center in Pittsburgh after an accident Thursday evening at a Eureka Hunter Pipeline operation near Wick. A fourth man was taken to Sistersville General Hospital, where he was treated and released. Tyler County officials said the accident was an explosion at a compressor station.
Eureka's parent company, Magnum Hunter Resources, said it was a flash fire at a "pig receiving station." Pigs are devices used to clean or to inspect pipelines. Magnum said initial reports indicate that natural gas liquids ignited in tanks during "pigging" operations and fueled the fire. The workers were employed by contractors for Magnum.

FIRE CAUSES MINOR EXPLOSIONS AT DISTRIBUTING COMPANY

PHOENIX -
A shipping container caught fire at a distributing company near Grande Avenue and McDowell Road on Sunday night.
According to Phoenix Fire Department, minor explosions occurred after a Conex box outside Star Distributing Company caught fire.
A Conex box is a sturdy container commonly used on trains and at some businesses.
Placards on the outside of the box read that whatever was inside had a level four hazardous threat, the highest level possible.
Crews were able to quickly contain the fire. They used saws to cut holes into the box and found it was full of aerosol cans.
Phoenix Fire Cpt. Jonathan Jacobs says the fire caused the cans to heat up and explode.
The auto parts distributing company is located in a primarily industrial area and no homes were threatened.

INDIANAPOLIS Ñ An Indianapolis apartment explosion has seriously injured two workers.
Wayne Township Fire Department spokesman Mike Pruitt says the workers were applying paint or stain to cabinet when a something ignited a buildup of fumes. The force of the blast blew the front door off the unit.
The workers have been taken to the burn unit at Wishard Memorial Hospital. They names were not immediately available.

TEENS ESCAPE UNHARMED FROM GASOLINE-AIDED TAMWORTH GARAGE FIRE

TAMWORTH - No one was injured in an early morning fire at 725 Turkey Street in Tamworth Monday morning.
The fire was started when a group of teens used gasoline to get a woodstove fire going.
Chief Rich Colcord of the Tamworth Fire Department said five teens, who were having a sleepover in a 30-foot by 40-foot garage, managed to escape without injury from a blaze that was reported at 5:55 a.m.
Colcord said the teens woke up cold, and tried to get a fire going in the woodstove. When that was unsuccessful, one teen used gasoline.
The resulting blowback caused the teen to retreat, during which more gas was spilled.
Colcord said the resident of the house was informed, and was able to get his vehicle out of the garage, but in doing so ran over the gas can.

QUAKERTOWN, PA. Ñ Carbon monoxide has apparently killed four people in an eastern Pennsylvania home where police found a car running in the garage.
State police Lt. Vincent D'Angelo says authorities haven't yet determined whether the car was left running accidentally or intentionally. He says the victims were all members of the same family.
Police were called to the home in Milford Township, Bucks County, at 11:20 p.m. Monday, and found it filled with carbon monoxide. The fire department also responded and discovered the victims. Efforts to revive them were unsuccessful.
D'Angelo says police are not looking for a suspect, and that there is no danger to the public.

CHEMICAL SPILL AT NANO COLLEGE

ALBANY - Several people employed by a contractor at the Albany Nano Tech complex were treated and released for chemical exposure, after a minor spill Monday morning.
Firefighters were called to the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering around 9:30 a.m.
The workers had been making a tool delivery at the new NFX building when the spill occurred.
Five of them were exposed to water containing 30 percent hydrogen peroxide, which got on their forearms. Three were taken to the hospital as a precaution, and have been released.
A college spokesperson says the leak was due to an error by the tool manufacturer.

GARBAGE TRUCK FIRE CAUSES HAZMAT SITUATION IN LINCOLN-LEMINGTON

LINCOLN-LEMINGTON (KDKA) - A routine garbage pick-up route turned into a Hazmat situation this morning after something in the truck started smoking.
....Unbeknownst to them, the Environmental Services worker accidently threw chemicals hidden in a trash bag into the truck. They mixed, caught fire and produced a potentially dangerous foam.
"I really don't know what chemicals or anything else was or if it was hazardous," Gregory Olverson said.
As firefighters went door-to-door, Hazmat crews arrived to contain the situation.
As it turns out, officials were able to track where they believed the chemicals came from, which happened to be Olverson's trash.
He was clearing out some of his deceased father's belongings from the basement.
"I just remember it was something heavy," Olverson said.
The truck was taken out of service and was decontaminated. Pittsburgh Environmental Services said this is a common problem.

MARION, Va. -- Town crews are looking for the source of some gasoline in the sanitary sewer along North Main Street.
The gas is no danger to the public, according to a written statement from town emergency officials. HAZMAT crews are working Monday evening to contain the gas, the statement said.
Residents are asked to call the Smyth County Sheriff's Office at (276) 783-7204 if they smell gas in their home or business, the statement said. The gas is believed to be along North Main Street from Chatham Hill Road to the train station in Marion.

Five JBS Swift employees are recovering after exposure to dangerous chemicals Sunday night.
The Grand Island Fire Department responded to a phone call just before 10:00 pm Sunday night.
News 5's Lauren Conley spoke with Chief Cory Shmidt. This wasn't a chemical spill, but a chemical reaction.
It seems that someone accidentally poured chlorine into a tank of acid.
This caused a chemical reaction that produced harmful vapors.
The tank held 1,000 gallons of liquid. So, you can imagine this was a lot of chemicals. But the fumes were concentrated to one area of the plant.

One person was hospitalized Monday afternoon following a chemical spill and possible explosion at a Southwest Side factory, according to the Chicago Fire Department.
One person was taken from the scene, in the 4800 block of South St. Louis Avenue, in fair to serious condition to Holy Cross Hospital, the fire department reported.
A Level I HazMat Ñ or hazardous materials Ñ response was called about 12:50 p.m. for the spill at the factory, located in an industrial area of the Archer Heights neighborhood. The scene was secured by 1:35 p.m.
The spilled chemical was sodium hypochloride, the fire department reported. The chemical is widely used for its bleaching, disinfecting and oxidizing properties.
According to unconfirmed fire dispatch reports, an explosion was caused when a couple of chemicals, one of them cyanide, were mixed.

U.S. BOARD TELLS CHEVRON TO CHECK REFINERIES FOR DAMAGE

The U.S. Chemical Safety Board on Monday recommended that Chevron Corp check for ongoing damage to pipes and equipment at its U.S. refineries to prevent another explosion like the August 6 pipeline blast at the company's San Francisco Bay area refinery.
The Safety Board, in an interim report issued Monday, said Chevron did not act upon six recommendations over 10 years to increase inspection and replace the line at its Richmond, California, refinery with upgraded pipe.
During the 10 years before the August 6 blast, refinery officials saw signs the pipeline's walls were thinning due to corrosion from rising sulfur content in the increasingly diverse crude oil grades the refinery was processing, the CSB found.

A train derailment led to a fuel spill in Cedar Rapids Monday morning.
A spokesperson for Iowa Northern Railway Company says a switch malfunctioned causing one engine to push another off the tracks.
Officials say the collision punctured a fuel tank and they couldn't stop the leak.
