Accessing chemical health and safety data online using Royal Society of Chemistry resources

The internet has opened up access to large amounts of chemistry related data that can be harvested and assembled into rich resources of value to chemists. The Royal Society of Chemistry?s ChemSpider database has assembled an electronic collection of over 28 million chemicals from over 400 data sources and some of the assembled data is certainly of value to those searching for chemical health and safety information. Since ChemSpider is a text and structure searchable database chemists are able to find relevant information using both of their general search approaches. This presentation will provide an overview of the types of chemical health and safety data and information made available via ChemSpider and discuss how the data are sourced, aggregated and validated. We will examine how the data can be made available via mobile devices and examine the issue of data quality and its potential impacts on such a database.

AGAWAM - A resident unwittingly touched off a hazardous materials scare that brought an emergency response after an attempt to bring old chemicals to the town?s waste recovery collection at the Public Works Department on Saturday.
Fire Department Lt. Kenneth J. Sagendoph said the call came in at 12:34 p.m. about the resident, who brought petroleum ether and picric acid, volatile and explosive chemicals, to the collection sponsored by Clean Harbors. The chemicals were turned away, and public safety officials were alerted to the situation, and responded to the resident?s address at Avalon Place.
Sagendorph said the resident took a box of old chemicals from an elderly relative to dispose of them.
?The residents were surprised. They didn?t expect the response they got,? Sagendorph said.
A section of North Street was closed, from Ridgeway Drive to Wilbert Terrace, for the investigation. In addition to police and fire, the state police bomb squad was called to help remove the chemicals because they could explode if combined. He said there were also unidentified chemicals in the box as well.

CHEMICAL LEAK DRAWS HAZMAT RESPONSE TO VERIZON HEADQUARTERS IN BASKING RIDGE

BERNARDS ? A 16-gallon chemical leak at the Verizon Operations Center and headquarters drew Somerset County Hazmat vehicles to the area Saturday afternoon, according to company officials.
The building, at 1 Verizon Way, was not evacuated, and only a handful of people were at the center Saturday afternoon, said Bob Varettoni, Verizon's executive director of media relations.
"We were installing fuel cells in the basement of the building, and as part of the installation, (the construction company) ProVac removed one of the air conditioner chillers," Varettoni said. "When they removed one of the chillers and cut it in half, they saw some chemical."
The chemical was lithium bromide, which Varettoni said is typical in old air conditioning units.

CLEVELAND ? Hazmat was called to a rental car facility near Cleveland Hopkins International Airport Friday evening after a suspicious substance was found in a rental car.
According to Cleveland police, an employee observed white powder in the backseat and truck of a returned rental car around 8:30 p.m. The interior trim and spare tire were missing and a hole had been burnt through the trunk floor.
An employee identified the man who returned the vehicle who was still walking nearby. The suspect, Christopher Frank, was found on a shuttle bus.
Frank told police he was with his girlfriend on Wednesday when they entered an abandoned building and removed 5 glass bottles, 3 of which contained liquid. One was labeled as hydrogen chloride. The bottles, along with some other items, were placed in the trunk of the rented vehicle.
Frank told police he later noticed a strong odor coming from the vehicle that made breathing difficult. He found two of the bottles containing liquid had spilled in the trunk.
The couple drove to a car wash and sprayed water in the trunk. A friend told Frank to apply baking soda. They then discarded the bottles, interior parts and a spare tire into a trash can.
According to police, the car is a total loss.

At least eight people were injured late Monday night after a series of explosions that lasted for nearly 30 minutes rocked a central Florida propane-gas plant, causing a fire that spread and took more than three hours to extinguish.
The explosions occurred at the Blue Rhino propane plant in Tavares ? about 40 miles northwest of Orlando ? around 11 p.m. as a crew of 24 to 26 people worked an overnight shift, said John Herrell of the Lake County Sheriff's Office, speaking to reporters at a news conference early Tuesday morning.
On Tuesday morning, Tavares Fire Chief Richard Keith told reporters at the scene that the explosions were the likely result of "human or equipment errors," the Orlando Sentinel reported.
Three male victims were airlifted and admitted to Orlando Regional Medical Center for burns, a spokeswoman for the hospital told Al Jazeera. Another person injured in the explosion was listed in critical condition at University of Florida Health Shands Hospital.

TRUCK EXPLODES AT WESTBANK CHEMICAL FACILITY

A truck exploded this morning at a facility where the Harvey Canal meets the Mississippi River.
Officials say the truck was loading a chemical when it caught fire and blew up at the Kinder Morgan Chemical plant.
The fire is now out and one person was injured.
Sheriff's spokesman John Fortunato says one person suffered a minor leg injury in the explosion at the Kinder Morgan bulk storage facility in an industrial area.
Neighbors in the area of the 3400 block of River Road in Harvey described hearing explosions and then seeing smoke and flames.
"I heard 'BOOM' and my whole house shook," one man told WWL First News. "It was just a big explosion with smoke and a fireball in the air."

Fire broke out before dawn Friday at a chrome-plating business on South West Street in Wichita.
No one was injured in the fire at Chrome Plus International. Heavy smoke filled the area when firefighters arrived around 4:30 a.m. A HazMat truck was on the scene as a precaution, since dangerous chemicals are used at the business.
The cause of the fire was not immediately clear.

MORRISTOWN, Ariz. -
MORRISTOWN, Ariz. (AP) - A seven-mile stretch of U.S. 60 northwest of Phoenix has reopened after a nearly six-hour closure Friday morning because of a hazardous material incident.
The Department of Public Safety says a truck was hauling copper concentrate that began to smolder and emit a toxic gas, hydrogen sulfide.
The driver felt woozy and pulled over. He was treated at a hospital and released. Firefighters cooled off the load with water.
DPS spokesman Bart Graves says another truck had a similar load that was smoldering when it arrived in Phoenix. He says firefighters put out the fire and there was no injury.

PRESIDENTS ISLAND, Tenn. (FOX13) -
Two W. M. Barr employees were taken to The MED Friday evening after two 55-gallon drums exploded at the Presidents Island plant.
Both employees were decontaminated as a precautionary measure after being exposed to an unknown substance. They were taken to The MED's burn unit, said Memphis Fire spokesman Lt. Wayne Cooke.
Both employees are in non-critical condition and they shared an ambulance to the hospital.
The fire department received a call there was an explosion at the plant at around 6:55 p.m. When crews arrived 42 of the plants employees had evacuated.
Lt. Cooke said two of their 10 55-gallon containers of unknown substances exploded and it got on two of the employees.

SEPT-ILES, QC - A botched reservoir transfer caused 450,000 litres of oil to spill into a bay 900 km northeast of Montreal on Tuesday.
The water and the banks of the bay in Sept-Iles, Que., were contaminated with fuel over an 8-km stretch.
The Cliffs National Resources mining company was conducting a transfer operation when the spill occurred.
Quebec Environment Minister Yves-Francois Blanchet said emergency officials have set up booms to contain the spill, but 2,000 litres got passed the barriers and reached the water.

STORRS? A University of Connecticut building was evacuated Thursday afternoon after a reported chemical spill inside a laboratory.
The building, on Auditorium Avenue, was evacuated at approximately 1 p.m., said Dennis Schain, spokesman for the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
Nobody was injured, Schain said.
About a gallon of tetrahydrofuran, a solvent, was spilled in a chemical storage area.
"It has an extremely pungent odor ? not very toxic but not very pleasant to breathe either," DEEP spokesman Dwayne Gardner said in an email.
The spill was cleaned up and the building was ventilated, Gardner said just before 5 p.m. He added people will be let back into the building once the odor is gone and the air samples are satisfactory.
DEEP officials responded to the lab and were assisted by the UConn fire department.

September 5, 2013 (HOMEWOOD, Ill.) (WLS) -- Preparations are being made for removing containers of chemicals found near a park in south suburban Homewood.
Years ago, it was used to house anti-aircraft Nike missiles for the Army.
A spokesperson for the Army Corps of Engineers says the containers are not dangerous. They contain rocket fuel and were buried before certain environmental guidelines were put in place.
The site is near Apollo Park and part of the area was closed as a precaution.

WHARTON, West Virginia ? State environmental officials are investigating a chemical spill from a Boone County coal operation that turned a river into a shade of milky white.
Department of Environmental Protection spokeswoman Kathy Cosco says more than 2,000 gallons spilled into the Pond Fork River near Wharton. Cosco says the nontoxic substance is sprayed on coal and rail cars to help minimize the spread of dust.
Cosco says the spill came from Patriot Coal subsidiary Eastern Associated Coal. Patriot says the spill occurred Wednesday night and that the DEP was contacted immediately.
Media outlets report a five-mile stretch of the river is covered by the chemical.
Cosco says no fish kills have been reported and residents are being urged not to swim in the water or drink it while cleanup continues.

The president of Dow Corning Greater China said China's chemical companies are changing their attitude about workplace safety and are willing to invest more time and money in it.
Jeremy Burks, who also is chairman of the Association of International Chemical Manufacturers, said the development is encouraging.
Founded in 1988, the association represents more than 50 international chemical enterprises that have major investments in China.
The AICM has closely communicated and exchanged opinions with the National Registration Center for Chemicals on the preparation and revision of Hazardous Chemicals Inventory and other related laws, regulations and standards.
"We promote our members' best practices in China and try to raise workplace safety with China in the global chemical industry," Burks said. "Much chemical expertise and the experience of foreign companies can be applied in China."
Burks said the biggest challenge facing China's chemical industry over worker safety is building on knowledge and expertise.
"Maybe it's not fashionable to choose the work safety sector in the chemical industry in China, but it is really crucial for the companies," he said. "Good safety leads to reliability and quality, which helps with cost-effectiveness."
"Investments in safety will result in a higher return than the companies realize," he said.

WHAT'S THAT SMELL?

It was the million-dollar question on everybody's mind in Tampa after their morning commute: What in the world was that smell?
"It had the smell of a natural gas, or a propane gas-type release," said Tampa Fire Rescue Chief Tom Forward.
The "gas-like" smell was such an issue that emergency personnel in Tampa were forced into action.
"911 dispatch center received an alarm of an odor in the downtown area," said Forward.
An investigation turned up a few hunches, but no concrete answer. To get that, you had to head to strawberry country.
"We have a new chemical that many of the farms are using in larger quantity for the first time called Paladin," said Florida Strawberry Growers Executive Director Ted Campbell.
Paladin is used to fumigate the soil before any berries are planted, killing anything that would put the crop in jeopardy.
"It's organic, safe, used as a food additive, all the good stuff is there. But it has the smell of onion, garlic what you smell with propane or natural gas," said Campbell.
The chemical has been used for a couple of weeks now.
The smell found its way to Tampa thanks to a Florida summer tradition -- rain.
