Dear Division Officers:

Are you aware that for the ACS national awards presented in 2013 women were only 7% of the nominees for the 45 national awards that are based solely on outstanding technical achievements? This has occurred despite the fact that women have earned more than 25% of Ph.D.?s in chemistry awarded since 1970 and the percentage of female tenured and tenure-track faculty members at the top research institutions currently is approximately 17%. Furthermore, 71% of the ACS national technical awards had only one or no female nominees. Clearly, the under-representation of female nominees is not a result of too few women with the appropriate training or position.

The American Chemical Society needs your assistance in addressing this situation. Through your symposia and workshops you know the individuals who are doing outstanding research. Please make a special effort to identify the women who have made significant technical advances and then nominate them for an ACS award by Friday, November 1 at http://www.nominate.acs.org. To assist you in this effort, we have attached a list of the national awards that are closely tied to the focus of your Division along with other national awards that have too few nominees. Needless to say if you know of other individuals from groups not commonly recognized by the ACS Awards Program, such as minorities, chemists from industry and the national laboratories, please nominate them for an award. Your actions will demonstrate that the Society is committed to the pursuit of excellence in the chemical sciences by recognizing, promoting, and honoring outstanding contributions regardless of the researcher?!
s gender, race, ethnicity or employer.

And last, please let us know if there are other awards that should have been included in the ?Awards Information? list you received or excluded from that list. As well as, are there any suggestions that you have that would improve the ACS national award process?

We sincerely appreciate your assistance and support in assisting G&A in maintaining the high integrity of the national awards. If you have any questions or concerns, I can be reached at vjkuck**At_Symbol_Here**gmail.com or you may contact Ms. Felicia Dixon, Manager, ACS National Awards Office at 202-872-6283 or at f_dixon**At_Symbol_Here**acs.org.
