MENANDS, N.Y. ? A chemical smell at an office building in Menands on Thursday night had hazmat crews working to figure out what people smelled and if anyone was in danger.
Around 7:30 Thursday night, West Albany Fire and Hazmat responded to 150 Broadway, an office building, for a reported chemical smell.
The building was mostly evacuated by the time crews arrived. Officials say the smell was due to a chemical being used for roof work on the building, which was pulled into the fifth floor by the heating unit.
One woman was taken to the hospital for breathing problems.
"When you read about this type of chemical, irritation is common and not really a big deal,? explained West Albany Fire Chief Daniel Sullivan, ?You get some fresh air and maybe administer some oxygen to get it out of your system"

HACIENDA HEIGHTS (CBSLA.com) ? East and westbound lanes of the 60 Freeway in Hacienda Heights have been reopened after a truck that was hauling cylinders of liquid hydrogen caught on fire Thursday.
California Highway Patrol Officer Patrick Kimball said no injuries have been reported as a result of the fire on the eastbound Pomona Freeway, first reported at 2:48 p.m. Thursday.
East and westbound lanes were subsequently closed between Hacienda Boulevard and Azusa Avenue. Eastbound lanes began slowly reopening at approximately 9 p.m., about an hour after westbound lanes were cleared for traffic.
The truck driver told authorities she heard a loud sound, noticed the fire and called 911.
Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Scott Miller confirmed the truck was hauling compressed hydrogen. Fire crews spent hours dousing the truck?s tanks from a distance.
CHP spokesman Jeremy Entolen told CBS2/KCAL9 the substance on the truck needed time to cool before traffic could move safely through.
?We just want to make sure there?s no potential explosion hazard,? he said. ?We don?t release raw substance into the atmosphere.?

NY PHARMACIST ACCUSED IN NJ OF ASSEMBLING DRUG LAB

Federal authorities in New Jersey have accused a pharmacist from New York City of assembling equipment for an illegal drug lab.
Authorities say 33-year-old Jordan Gonzalez made a series of purchases through an online auction website of materials associated with the hallucinogen known as MDA. Prosecutors say the purchases included chemicals, flasks and empty gel caps.
Authorities on Thursday were conducting searches in Jersey City, where Gonzalez used to live, and in New York City.
He's charged with attempting to manufacture MDA and possessing chemicals and materials to manufacture a controlled substance.

Six undergraduate students were exposed when a plastic container of waste chemicals ruptured in a Chemistry Annex teaching lab at around 4 p.m. Tuesday, according to an email Jonathan Sweedler, director of the School of Chemical Sciences, sent to SCS faculty, staff, postdoctoral and graduate students.
As a safety precaution, five of the exposed students used a safety shower and were taken to a medical facility. One of the students reported having a chemical burn on their nose, campus spokeswoman Robin Kaler said in an email.
Kaler also said a sixth student reported a minor irritation on their face to at TA a few hours later.
The investigation of the exact cause of the chemical reaction is ongoing, but initial findings show that a waste container exploded due to a buildup of excessive pressure.
?The Division of Research Safety believes the reaction was caused by nitric acid mixing with a reducing agent to produce a nitrogen oxide gas,? Kaler said in the email. Two containers of ammonium hydroxide broke due to the rupture, releasing ammonia gas into the air, she added.
Students were able to retrieve their belongings from the lab later that night, and the lab was opened for classes on Wednesday.
Kaler also stated in the email that ?To prevent something like this from happening again, the laboratory instructors have removed nitric acid from this experiment pending a more detailed review of the laboratory?s objectives and whether the use of nitric acid is necessary for those objectives.?

A FIRE burning beneath tonnes of rubbish containing toxic chemicals has residents of an Ipswich suburb concerned about the quality of air they are breathing.
Smoke from the blaze burning at Transpacific Industries' New Chum dump since Wednesday morning is blowing over homes in Collingwood Park.
President of dump protest group IRATE, Jim Dodrill, said a chemical smell had descended across the suburb.
But a Transpacific Industry spokesperson said the area of dump on fire held "low-level waste" only.
Fire crews were called to the fire in the early hours of Wednesday morning and the fire was still smouldering yesterday.
Mr Dodrill said it was not acceptable for residents to be exposed to potentially dangerous chemicals.
He said the site had previously been used to dump asbestos and contaminated soil.
"The smoke and the fire could get out of control. The air quality and the health of the people in the area, the local creek and the Brisbane River will be contaminated," he said.

HOUSTON ? Two workers were transported Thursday after a chemical spill in the JP Morgan Chase Tower in downtown Houston, Houston Fire Department officials said.
The chemical spill was reported at about 1:55 p.m. in the basement of the building in the 600 block of Travis Street.
The basement was evacuated after investigators said the lid of a pressurized container came off.
The container contained a chemical identified as glutaraldehyde, HFD officials said. It is used in the health care industry most often to disinfect equipment that cannot be heat sterilized, such as dialysis instruments, surgical instruments, suction bottles, bronchoscopes, endoscopes, and ear, nose, and throat instruments.
Two workers? eyes and face were exposed to the chemical, and although exposure was minimal, they were transported for thorough decontamination and evaluation.

FIRE DAMAGES DETROIT CHEMICAL COMPANY, FORCES EVACUATIONS

A Detroit company that specializes in adhesives and paint was damaged Thursday by a fire that also forced the evacuation of surrounding homes and a nearby elementary school.
The fire started early Thursday afternoon at Chemical Technology Inc.'s offices and warehouse on the city's east side.
MyFoxDetroit.com reported that the result of the fire was a potentially toxic plume of smoke that forced police and fire crews to evacuate a 300 meter radius around the fire. Fire officials called the fire a level 3 hazardous material situation at its peak.
According to MyFoxDetroit.com all seven employees were able to escape the building without injury. As of 4:30 p.m. the fire was downgraded to a level 1.

FUMES FROM A BROKEN FIBERGLASS TRUCK SMELLED BY DEPUTY

Residents were told to stay inside early Tuesday as a hazmat unit investigated a flammable, fiberglass resin inside of a parked truck on Waterbridge Circle.
The 24-foot truck was discovered by an Orange County deputy, who smelled chemical fumes coming from the truck and felt woozy, WESH-TV reported.
Deputies located the man who rented the truck. The refrigeration unit on the truck malfunctioned, causing the odor.
The man was driving the truck back from Ocala and off-loaded the materials, according to TV news reports.

Ambulance and fire crews attended Carden Park Hotel and Spa at Clutton, near Chester, shortly after 7am yesterday.
They were called after reports of a man falling ill with breathing difficulties after he inhaled fumes from a spilled chemical container.
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said the man was working with a tank of chemicals containing sodium bisulphate and sodium hyrdochloride ? used to reduce the pH level in swimming pools ? at the time of the incident and is an employee of the hotel.
The North West Ambulance Service said the man attended Wrexham Maelor Hospital.
Another man presented himself to hotel staff with a sore throat following the incident.

BELVIDERE (WIFR) -- A person is sent to the hospital and many more evacuated after a chemical accident at the Belvidere Chrysler Plant.
Belvidere?s Fire Chief says the situation is stable and they are monitoring the air quality inside the plant but they are allowing tonight?s shift to come in for work.
Video from earlier today shows a large number of workers standing out in the cold when the entire day shift was evacuated today just afternoon.
Chrysler says two chemicals were mixed by employees that shouldn?t have been. Workers say that chemical reaction created a very strong odor. The fire department says the one person who was sent to the hospital was the only injury at the scene and don?t know that person?s condition at this time.
The fire department says they?re still investigating this incident.
Nearly 4,500 people work at the plant. The Belvidere Fire Department brought in private contractors to help with cleanup.
