2 UCONN STUDENTS TO HOSPITAL FOLLOWING CHEMICAL SPILL

Two students were taken to the hospital for an evaluation following a chemical spill inside a UConn engineering lab Sunday evening, according to university fire officials.
The students were working with a combination of ammonia and sulfuric acid when about a cup of the mixture spilled at the Engineering II building at 260 Glenbrook Road, said UConn Fire Chief John Mancini. Fire officials responded to the scene around 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
Both students evacuated following the spill and were taken to the hospital as a precaution, Mancini said.

Gilbert firefighters responded to a small fire at a biodiesel manufacturing plant Saturday morning.
Division Chief Brian Ruffentine said a forklift struck a 330-gallon tank containing some sort of acid at 1980 W. Commerce Ave.
The chemical was not immediately clear, but the substance released from the tank caught fire, he said. The flames were quickly extinguished by the building's fire suppression sprinklers, Ruffentine said.
No injuries or evacuations were reported.

CLINTON ? Archer Daniels Midland in Clinton reported on Wednesday a hazardus material spill at the corn processing plant on Lincolnway.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources reports that more than a pound of toxic mercury spilled onto the ground and into the company?s 1,400 foot deep well, in the Jordan aquifer when a contractor was pulling a submersible pump from the well and the mercury seal in the pump broke.
The pump where the seal broke holds 17.25 pounds of mercury.
After the report of the spill, DNR officers removed the soil impacted and soil testing is planned. Approximately more than a pound of mercury has been recovered.

PASCAGOULA, Mississippi -- Alabama resident Tonya Graddy, a five-year employee of Chevron Pascagoula Refinery, was killed in the early morning explosion and fire today, company leaders said during an 11 a.m. press conference.

The explosion happened in the furnace of the Cracking II Processing Unit around 2 a.m. Friday, according to Alan Sudduth, the company's public and government affairs director.
The cracking unit is used in the process breaking down hydrocarbons in the conversion crude oil into fuel and chemicals.
A second person received minor injuries, was given first aid at the scene and was released.

Dangerous chemicals estimated to be worth nearly $4 million have been stolen from a Melbourne factory, with police fearing it will be sold off to schoolies as a party drug.
Several drums containing hundreds of litres of an industrial solvent are missing from the factory and believed to have been stolen between Friday and Tuesday.
Police say the chemical could be marketed by drug dealers as 'Blue Nitro'.
The chemical will have a similar effect to GHB when it's ingested but can be lethal if too much is taken.
Acting Inspector Tim Day says he's very concerned about what could happen, with the school year coming to an end.

WASHINGTON ? Industry representatives made clear Friday that they will strongly oppose many of the tough chemical safety regulations that reformers have been calling for since a devastating explosion killed 15 people in West.
Instead of new rules, federal officials should enforce the ones already on the books, said lawyers and lobbyists for firms that make, sell, transport, use and store compounds such as the fertilizer linked to April?s disaster.
?We were all saddened by the tragedy at West,? said Richard Gupton, general counsel for the Agricultural Retailers Association. ?But we oppose putting some kind of regulation or statutory law in place? that further restricts the use of dangerous chemicals.
Risks are part of daily life, he said, and the government should allow companies, customers and manufacturers to determine which risks are acceptable, so long as they follow existing law.

Cape Coral fire crews responded to a chemical spill at Cape Coral Hospital Friday morning.
According to Cape Coral Fire Department officials, crews were called to the scene after a hospital employee found a chemical spill around 6:15 a.m.
HAZMAT technicians found a container of peroxyacetic acid leaking down a shelf in a storage area.
The HAZMAT technicians removed the container and hospital crews handled the clean-up.
Hospital officials say no threats were made to anyone in the facility. None of the patients were impacted by the spill.
In hospitals, peroxyacetic acid is used for cleaning and contains between 15 to 25 percent concentrations. With this high concentration, peroxyacetic acid can cause skin irritation and difficulty breathing.

A strong odor from a chemical solvent that was flushed through the sewer line forced the evacuation of two three-family homes in North Bergen Thursday morning, fire officials said.
North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue members were called to a building at 61st Street and Kennedy Boulevard at 11:27 a.m. on the report of a strong chemical odor, NHRFR Chief Frank Montagne said.
But firefighters realized the smell was not coming from that building and tracked the odor to 5843 Kennedy Blvd. two blocks away, Montagne said.

There was a HazMat situation Friday morning on the University of Rochester campus.
University representatives say shortly after midnight someone smelled oil in the laboratory for laser energetics.
Officials say there was no chemical threat however it was just a blown out motor in a compressor.
The situation was resolved around 3 a.m.

A Los Angeles middle school student was injured when a package containing dry ice for a science experiment exploded Wednesday, authorities said.
The incident happened midday at Mark Twain Middle School located at 2224 Walgrove Ave., in Mar Vista (map).
A student brought two packages containing dry ice to school for a 6th grade science experiment when one of the containers ?popped,? according to a watch commander from the Los Angeles Police Department?s Pacific Division.
Students were supposed to build a volcano, according to Lt. David Crew.
The injured student may have been struck by either the dry ice or a piece of the container, the watch commander said.
A janitor reportedly found the second container and put it outside. A bomb squad was responding as a matter of routine.
The injured student was treated and released to his or her parent, according to school police.
Investigators characterized the incident as an accident, however the school was placed on lockdown during the investigation. Hundreds of students could be seen gathered at the far end of a sports field, away from school buildings.
