2 INJURED IN CHEMICAL LAB FIRE AT CSU SAN MARCOS

Two students were injured in a small chemical reaction fire at a lab at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) Friday night, school officials confirmed.
The chemical reaction, which caused a small fire, happened on campus in Room 206B and prompted a Hazmat investigation at the college.
According to school officials, three students were working with three unspecified substances in a physics lab when a chemical reaction caused the substances to ignite. Investigators say there was no blast or explosion, as initially reported, but rather a small fire that the students were able to put out using a nearby fire extinguisher.
Officials said one student sustained an injury to the right eye and was transported to Palomar Medical Center. Another student was treated at the scene, and a third was not harmed in the lab incident. The injured student was later released from the hospital.
School officials said the students were preparing rocket fuel for a model rocket demonstration related to Super STEM Saturday, a science event held at the CSUSM campus on Saturday. The free event ? which officials confirmed will go on as planned ? features dozens of interactive, hands-on science activities, according rocket launches, build-a-robot stations and model displays.
School officials said the students did have permission to be in the physics lab Friday night without supervision.

Tainted homes, a closed school and growing bills sum up DeSoto County's mercury spill.
We're learning more about how much a child played with the dangerous element.
Bouncing mercury off a trampoline ? EPA agents tell us that's how na•ve this kid was about the harmful element.
From the air, you can see the trampoline.
HAZMAT crews found beads of mercury underneath it ? about 40 feet from the house.
Now, work continues in DeSoto County to clean up the mess.
"Poisonous, dangerous. It's really bad," said neighbor Rodney Morgan.
Taking every precaution, the HAZMAT crews prompted panic.
"It's unbelievable, shocking," said Morgan, "Nobody warned us. Nobody walking around knocking on the door telling anybody in the neighborhood."
Their work stretches into day three at the Arcadia home on South Volusia Avenue.

BUTTERWORTH: Four containers laden with highly inflammable chemical substances were razed in a pre-dawn blaze at Penang Port today.
A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said firemen put out the fire shortly after it broke out 'about 5am.
Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.
The spokesman said the department received a distress call and deployed several personnel and a hazmat team to the scene.
?We took an hour to bring the flames under control.
"The Hazmat team was engaged as a precautionary step as the chemical substancess could burn easily,? he said when contacted.
