A TRUCK driver who left his chemical-laden vehicle ablaze on Eyre Highway near the West Australian border is being sought by police.

The truck was found about 20 metres off the road about 11pm (WST) on Sunday and was believed to be carrying hazardous chemicals.

Eucla police and the local fire officer repeatedly tried to put out the fire, but it continues to burn.

A member of the local community is now trying to put it out using a front-end loader and sand.

Police are on the scene and managing traffic on Eyre Highway.

The driver of the truck fled and is yet to be found.

Police believe he was picked up by another truck driver heading towards South Australia.

Eyre Highway is now closed in both directions between Madura and Mundrabilla as toxic fumes from the fire is making it hazardous for motorists.

A UCLA student suffered chest injuries and burns to his face and neck when a laboratory oven exploded Saturday evening, authorities said.

The student was conducting a science experiment on the second floor of the campus engineering building at around 6 p.m. when the accident happened, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphries.

The student is in fair condition at a local hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening, Humphries said.

The lab has been closed off to allow fire officials to investigate, but students and staff have not been ordered to evacuate the six-story building.

HOUSTON ? A giant Texas oil company, Anadarko Petroleum, has agreed to pay $5.1 billion for a vast environmental cleanup, a sum the Justice Department said was the largest it had ever won in such a case.

The settlement, announced on Thursday, is aimed at restoring thousands of sites polluted by toxins and compensating thousands of people with personal injury claims.

The case stretches back almost a decade, originating with claims against Kerr-McGee, an Oklahoma energy and chemical company that is now a subsidiary of Anadarko, one of the country?s most successful oil and gas producers.

Anadarko had argued that it could not be held liable for pollution caused by Kerr-McGee, which had ostensibly passed the liabilities on to a spinoff company called Tronox, which later declared bankruptcy. But a bankruptcy judge said the reorganization was simply an attempt to dodge liability.

CRESSKILL ? A contractor mixing chemicals to remove mold managed to concoct a chlorine cloud that forced the staff of the Cresskill Animal Hospital to evacuate the building with its furry patients Saturday morning.

A vapor cloud rising from the basement of the veterinarian's office left five staff members with symptoms of nausea and irritated eyes, Cresskill Fire Chief Christopher Ulshoefer said.

The building was declared unsafe and will remain shuttered until Monday morning, he added.

A fire has broken out at a CBD university overnight, resulting in a chemical spill and the closure of an entire city street.
....
MFB spokeswoman Heather Stockton said crews were called to Building 10 at RMIT University just before 2am on Sunday and found a cabinet containing unknown and dangerous chemicals on fire.

The MFB was accompanied by specialist hazardous materials trucks, a scientific officer and RMIT experts to advise crews on the chemicals.

Although the fire was quickly controlled, the MFB and police remain cautious about any potential chemical spillage and dangerous residue lingering in the air.

REVIEW OF GUIDELINES FOR LABORATORY DESIGN: HEALTH, SAFETY, AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS, 4TH EDITION

Tags: laboratory, discovery, environmental, unknown_chemical

When Guidelines for Laboratory Design: Health, Safety, and Environmental Considerations, 4th ed. was written, the goal was to make it easier for lab users and designers to meet the many challenges and considerations inherent in laboratory design, such as complying with health, safety, and environmental requirements. The book emphasizes the critical nature of the communication between the laboratory users, construction engineers, administration, and environmental health and safety personnel for a successful lab design. Such a design provides the best place for scientists to engage in research or teaching with reduced health and safety risks, as has been discussed in this Journal.(1, 2) The authors make it quite clear that a safe and efficient lab does not come about just by hiring the best in the business, but through clear communication and genuine cooperation between all parties involved, including those who will be working in the lab.

A research team at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) has developed a small electronic sensing device that can alert users wirelessly to the presence of chemical vapors in the atmosphere. The technology, which could be manufactured using familiar aerosol-jet printing techniques, is aimed at myriad applications in military, commercial, environmental, healthcare and other areas.

The current design integrates nanotechnology and radio-frequency identification (RFID) capabilities into a small working prototype. An array of sensors uses carbon nanotubes and other nanomaterials to detect specific chemicals, while an RFID integrated circuit informs users about the presence and concentrations of those vapors at a safe distance wirelessly.
