The chemistry department at the University of East Anglia was evacuated this morning after a fire broke out in one of the laboratories.

An alarm was sounding at the campus and students who had been evacuated from the laboratory were stood outside the block alongside firefighters who had been making sure the area was safe.

A spokesman for the fire service said there had been a number of crews sent to the fire due to the size of the building, but that the fire had been dealt with before their arrival due to a special C02 gas flooding system in place at the university.

?There was a well-coordinated evacuation and we are now focusing on trying to get people back in the building asap,? he said.

A spokesman for UEA said: ?We can confirm that the chemistry area of the Teaching Wall at UEA has been evacuated due to a small fire in a lab. Fire crews responded within minutes and are currently on scene to assess the situation. Fire safety systems were triggered and the building was evacuated immediately.?

PIQUA ? A chemical spill near downtown Piqua necessitated the closing of a portion of North Main Street on Tuesday.

A box truck carrying hazardous material stopped at the downtown Shell gas station around 9 a.m. when it was reported that something was spilling from the back of the vehicle.

Investigators from the Piqua Fire Department arrived at the scene and contacted the EPA.

It is believed that possibly 20-25 gallons of the chemical P500 (Permacel) Foaming Agent Concentrate spilled onto the concrete at the gas station.

According to the material safety data sheets for the products, P500 is used as a foaming and curing agent for Core-fill 500 resin. It is classified as a corrosive material.

LAKEWOOD, Colo. - Habanero pepper shreds were found strewn across a school playground after several children reported coughing and itchy eyes, the school district says.

Jefferson County Open School was evacuated just before 1 p.m. Monday when children on the playground started reporting the symptoms, according to district spokeswoman Melissa Reeves.

Thirty students and one teacher aid were decontaminated. Seven students were taken to St. Anthony's Hospital and to Exempla Lutheran Medical Center for treatment.

Initially, officials suspected that fertilizer applied to a soccer field at the school might have been the source of the irritation, but fire officials ruled that out.

Now, the district confirms to 7NEWS that shreds of "approximately six" habanero peppers were found on the playground in the wood chips. Reporter Lindsey Sablan asked if the peppers were put there intentionally, but the district could not answer the question at this time.

PHOENIX -- Crews from the Phoenix Fire Department were called to a business near Sky Harbor Airport Tuesday evening to check out a hazardous materials situation.
It happened at Summit Chemical Specialty near 29th Street and Washington.
A tank inside the water purification company reportedly overheated, causing a small fire. That fire resulted in a chemical reaction. Fire officials tell us the chemicals involved were aluminum, hydrochloric acid and water.
?What happened tonight has never happened before, which clearly means that they got a shipment of some bad chemicals," says Phoenix Fire Captain John Teefy. "So, they mixed some chemicals that they shouldn?t have. What happened was because it caused heat to build up in the tank to make hydrogen gas, which then flashed, slightly burning one of the employee. He?s fine."

POLICE and firefighters were at a school in Selsey after a ?chemical incident? this afternoon (April 8).

The emergency services arrived at The Academy, Selsey, at 1.30pm and evacuated staff after reports of a chemical spill at the site.

Sussex Police said: ?A member of staff in the science block was affected by fumes created by a chemical leak.

?He was taken to hospital for a check-up. Other staff at the school were evacuated none of whom were affected.?

However, the West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said the staff member was not taken to hospital, but was given first aid as a precaution.

Group manager at West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, Dave McMahon, was at the scene, and said: ?We are at The Academy in Selsey after a small chemical spill where they store chemicals for the science lab.

?We think there might be a leak of some of the chemicals.

?There?s 150 different chemicals in there at the moment and we don?t know which ones [are spilt].

The EPA is on scene clearing out more than 1,000 containers full of what it described as commercial grade chemicals.

Overnight, an EPA lab sprouted outside a Green lake home. The EPA's emergency response team is removing any and all hazardous chemicals.

"It's not where these type of chemicals belong," said Jeffry Rodin, Emergency Response On-Scene Coordinator for the EPA's District 10 office.

A tip from the Seattle Fire Department led the EPA to the 6300 block of 5th Avenue NE, which is the home of a man and his chemicals; many of them toxic, including Arsenic, Sodium Nitrate, Benzidine and Cadmium.

"The owner had a background in chemistry and research chemistry,"said Rodin.

Some neighbors referred to the homeowner as the "neighborhood's mad scientist," but one neighbor who knows him called him "eccentric."

Three employees of Stroh Precision Die Casting in Mauston?s West Industrial Park were taken to Mile Bluff Medical Center after a Friday-morning fire.

Mauston Fire Department Chief Kim Hale said the employees were taken to the hospital as a precaution for inhalation of smoke and chemicals after they attempted to put out the fire.

?Most of it I think was probably from the carbon-dioxide extinguishers they were using to try and put it out,? Hale said. ?They wasted seven or eight extinguishers and that stuff is pretty nasty.?

Hale said several of the employees had already returned to work early Friday afternoon. No firefighters were injured, Hale said.

The fire was caused by a build-up of aluminum dust inside machinery. Hale said the fire call came at 10:56 a.m. and firefighters cleared the scene at about 2:15 p.m. The fire created a lot of smoke, but Hale said hazardous materials handbooks indicated the smoke represented no public-health hazard.

Stroh Precision Die Casting was cited in 2011 and 2012 by OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, for safety violations.

A freezer storage warehouse in Norton was evacuated Thursday after an ammonia leak was detected in the building?s cooling system, fire officials said. No injuries were reported, and everyone in the immediate area was evacuated, according to Captain Al Fuller of the Norton Fire Department. Firefighters responded to 380 South Worcester St. for reports that a leak in the building?s extensive cooling system was allowing ammonia to seep into the area at 8 a.m. ?The leak has stopped at this point, and we?re waiting on the arrival of a hazmat team to evaluate it,? Fuller said.

On Jan. 9, a leak in a Freedom Industries chemical-storage facility contaminated the Elk River with 4-methylcyclohexane methanol, leaving 300,000 West Virginia residents without tap water for several days. Nearly three months after the spill, researchers have found that the accident continues to affect the water and air quality in the Mountain State.

?Based on our increasing understanding of the chemicals involved in the water crisis, the complexities and implications of the spill keep growing,? said Andrea Dietrich, professor of civil and environmental engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. ?People are still afraid to drink the water. Odors persist in schools, residences and businesses. Data are still lacking for the properties of the mixture of chemicals in the crude MCHM that spilled.?

Dietrich and her research team received a National Science Foundation grant to analyze the properties of crude 4-methylcyclohexane methanol, or MCHM, the major component in the chemicals that spilled into the Elk River. MCHM is used in the separation and cleaning of coal products.

JEFFERSON COUNTY - A mysterious substance officials describe as a "toxic irritant" caused a school-wide evacuation and hospitalized a handful of students at Jefferson County Open school in Lakewood Monday afternoon.

Police, firefighters and Hazmat crews surrounded the school around lunchtime. The pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade school is located at West 10th Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard in Lakewood.

"I just saw some guy being carried out on a stretcher," 8th grader Ciera Spaulding said.

West Metro Fire says 30 students and a teacher's aide were treated for symptoms similar to an allergic reaction. Hazmat crews decontaminated students outside the school. The rest of the students and staff were evacuated to a church down the street.

A TRUCK driver who left his chemical-laden vehicle ablaze on Eyre Highway near the West Australian border is being sought by police.

The truck was found about 20 metres off the road about 11pm (WST) on Sunday and was believed to be carrying hazardous chemicals.

Eucla police and the local fire officer repeatedly tried to put out the fire, but it continues to burn.

A member of the local community is now trying to put it out using a front-end loader and sand.

Police are on the scene and managing traffic on Eyre Highway.

The driver of the truck fled and is yet to be found.

Police believe he was picked up by another truck driver heading towards South Australia.

Eyre Highway is now closed in both directions between Madura and Mundrabilla as toxic fumes from the fire is making it hazardous for motorists.
