SAN LEANDRO -- Witnesses described a horrific scene after a reported explosion near a homeless encampment Tuesday evening, with a pair of badly burned people rushing to a neighboring home for help before being taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Alameda County fire spokeswoman Aisha Knowles said crews were called to the area near the railroad tracks at Hesperian Boulevard and Springlake Drive on reports of an explosion around 9:30 p.m. They discovered two people had been badly injured and summoned a hazardous materials team to the area to look for what caused their injuries, she said.

"There were two adults who ran from the encampment to a nearby apartment to ask for water," Knowles said. "They were in a lot of pain and felt like they were on fire."

A CSU student suffered cuts to his face Tuesday afternoon after a chemical reaction caused a glass container to explode.

The unidentified young man was washing out a glass container in the Chemistry Building on the Fort Collins campus when a chemical in the container reacted to the water and caused the container to explode at about 3:30 p.m., according to CSU spokeswoman Dell Rae Ciaravola. Blood was visible on his face when he was wheeled out of the building on a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance.

He was taken to the hospital for treatment of cuts on his face. Another student who was nearby had a minor cut on his hand.

There was no damage to the building, nor was there an evacuation, Ciaravola said. Minutes after the man was put in the ambulance, students in the building's lobby resumed quizzing each other, heads bowed over chemistry books.

Five people were hospitalized after coming in contact with a chemical at an office building in Pomona on Tuesday, fire officials said.

The chemical was apparently released at the five-story Verizon building in the 200 block of South Locust Street, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. People were complaining of minor eye irritation, rashes and coughing, officials said.

Workers at the building told NBC4 that the odor caused some people to vomit.

After evacuating 300 people from the building, investigators determined that the odor stemmed from an adhesive remover in a construction area on the building's third floor.

The Freeman Company will be open for business today (Wednesday) despite a chemical fire that damaged a room of the complex and forced workers to evacuate around 1:49 p.m. Tuesday.
Yankton deputy fire chief Larry Nickles said the fire was contained to a room used to de-rust metal parts that contained nitric acid.
At first, employees tried to put out the fire, he said.
‰??They noticed fire coming out of the top of the door of the room,‰?? Nickles said. ‰??A couple employees grabbed extinguishers and tried to knock down the fire until smoke pushed them outside. The building was completely evacuated and the fire department was called.‰??
Nickles said no injuries were reported and that the fire was contained to the room. However, smoke filled the rest of the building and took some time to clear out.

In one of the most decisive votes of the session the Vermont House supported the regulation of toxic chemicals found in children‰??s products. The vote was 114-27.

The bill, S.239, gives the Vermont Department of Health the authority to require manufacturers to label or remove toxic chemicals from products sold in the state.

‰??One of the problems that we face with this whole situation is the immense growth of new chemicals coming into the marketplace without testing,‰?? said Rep. David Deen, D-Putney, the chair of the Fish, Wildlife and Water Resources Committee who worked to draft the House version of the bill.

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) ‰?? A small fire burned at a western Wyoming natural gas processing plant Monday, five days after an explosion forced the evacuation of a nearby town and shut down the facility.

The fire has shrunk considerably since the blast and workers at the Tulsa, Oklahoma-based Williams Partners facility were allowing the blaze to burn to consume remaining gases, according to a company spokesman.

‰??It‰??s completely under our control. It‰??s not damaging any equipment,‰?? said the spokesman, George Angerbauer. ‰??We have personnel on site who are assessing the rest of the facility to determine operability and what it will take to get us back up and running.‰??

A man is in stable condition following a gas can explosion at an auto body shop in North Baton Rouge, LA, on March 22, 2014.
Curt Monte, spokesman for the Baton Rouge Fire Department, said the man was cutting on a car with a torch at Stampley‰??s Auto Body on Scenic Highway, near Walnut Street, shortly before noon when a gas can exploded.
Fire investigators say they think slag from the victim cutting on the car struck the can, causing the explosion, Monte said. The victim told firefighters that he tried putting the fire out with a fire extinguisher, but the can exploded before he could get the fire out, Monte said. The explosion damaged the car he was working on as well as three other cars in the shop.

LOGAN ‰?? Approximately 200 employees were evacuated from a part of Schreiber Foods after a cleaning chemical spilled Monday morning.
Logan City Fire Marshal Craig Humphreys said an employee called 911 around 8:30 a.m. to report the spill in a part of the plant, near 885 North 600 West.
When fire and Haz Mat crews arrived on the scene, they learned an employee had transferred a chemical from one tote container to another. For unknown reasons, pressure began to build in the tote, eventually causing it to burst. A fork lift and drop-down-door were damaged but none of the employees were injured.
Humphreys said crews worked as partners with Schreiber Foods facility Haz Mat team to respond to the spill. The chemical was contained within the facility.
There was an odor reported in the vicinity from the facilities ventilation system. There was no danger to residents or the community.
Humphreys said the chemical is used to sanitize and clean equipment and contained a mixture including hydrogen peroxide.

The cosmetics store which was engulfed by fire is located at Nand Enclave near Khirki Village. A fire department official said that the cause of the fire is believed to be a chemical reaction in the perfumes kept in a drum.

The store workers who were injured have been identified as Kalicharan, Surinder and Praveen.

They were busy separating some goods that had recently arrived at the store when the fire broke out in the drum kept nearby. ‰??The flames spread so quickly that the trio were unable to escape immediately,‰?? said an official.
