TEXAS A&M CANCELS CLASSES AFTER STAFFER KILLED IN LABORATORY ACCIDENT

One man has died in a laboratory explosion at Texas A&M University at Qatar today, officials have confirmed. The school staffer, who was not named in a statement released this evening, is reportedly survived by his wife and children.
In a statement, TAMUQ Dean and CEO Dr. Mark Weichold said:
?It is with great regret that I announce that a member of the Aggie family passed away today while working in a laboratory in the Texas A&M Engineering Building.
This is an unspeakable tragedy, and words cannot convey my condolences and compassion for his family, friends and colleagues. All of us share their grief.
The staff member?s family has been notified, and Texas A&M at Qatar is working closely with Qatar Foundation and Qatar government officials to determine the cause of today?s incident.?
Weichold added that classes will be canceled tomorrow, May 29, to give the community a chance to grieve, and will resume on Sunday, June 1.

A chemical odor detected at the Chandler Intel plant caused a limited evacuation of the building Thursday morning, fire officials said.
The scene was cleared after several hours after fire officials determined there were no chemical leaks.
Two contract employees reported smelling the odor in a room that contained toxic chemicals, according to the Chandler Fire Department.
The room was evacuated and fire crews assessed the situation to see if the chemicals were dangerous or explosive, officials said.
The two workers both displayed minor symptoms from chemical exposure, but both refused treatment by paramedics, officials said.

A possible hazardous materials situation prompted the evacuation of the Presidio Archaeology Lab in San Francisco this morning, fire officials said.
Fire crews were dispatched to the lab at 49 Moraga Ave. at 10:35 a.m. after receiving reports of an odor in the building and people inside not feeling well, according to the fire department.
The building was evacuated and crews are investigating the source of the odor. Fire officials could not immediately provide information about how many people were affected by the odor.

GRAYSON COUNTY, TX -- The fertilizer facility in Athens contained ammonium nitrate, the same chemical housed in the plant that exploded in West, Texas last year, and the same chemicals found in a fertilizer plant right here in Texoma.
Thursday, the State Fire Marshal met with Grayson County emergency officials to review the best safety practices when working with facilities containing ammonium nitrate.
The State Fire Marshal tells News12 there are 95 facilities in Texas with at least 10,000 pounds of ammonium nitrate or more.
He fire marshal says with more concern for fertilizer fires, it is even more crucial for emergency officials to have a safety plan in place when working with hazardous material.

WORKERS HOSPITALIZED DUE TO CHEMICAL ACCIDENT AT PLANT

REBECCA, GA ? Employees at a vegetable plant near Rebecca were hospitalized after a chemical accident, according tot he Turner County Fire Department.
According to EMA Director Robby Royal, an employee was putting acid reducer into a bucket, and was unaware that it was partially filled with chlorine. Then employees began to feel sick.
?Employees actually got nauseous, starting throwing up,? Royal said. ?It?s kind of like a chain reaction, folks see that they start getting scared.?
Turner County Fire Department Haz-mat was called to the plant.
Officials said 16 patients have been decontaminated and are in good condition. Three remain admitted to the hospital that brought in their emergency response team to handle the case.

ATHENS ? Firefighters battled a large fire Thursday evening at an East Texas facility that reportedly stores ammonium nitrate, the same fertilizer that ignited a deadly explosion in the town of West last year.
The fire was reported about 5:45 p.m. at East Texas Ag Supply in downtown Athens, about 70 miles southeast of Dallas.
Police said crews evacuated a five-block radius around the fire, which appeared to have mostly burned itself out more than two hours later.
Police said there had not been an explosion, and no injuries had been reported late Thursday.
The cause of the fire was not yet known.
The building was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, The Athens Daily Review reported.

EXCLUSIVE: An elderly Ridgewood resident escaped injury after igniting an explosion in his garage today by mixing chlorine, pool shock and warm water in a bucket, police said.
?He was really lucky,? Police Chief John Ward told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
Officer Rosario Vaccarella, who was passing by at the time, heard the mini-blast and saw a small cloud coming from the Willow Court garage, then ran inside and got the man out, Ward said.
?He was covered in the chemicals, and the garage was filled with fumes,? the chief said.
An ambulance took the man to The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood for evaluation and observation, Ward said.
Firefighters vented the garage and removed the remaining chemicals, he said.
Adding chlorine to other chemicals must be done one at a time, experts warn. Mixing chemicals before they hit pool water can create problems in the pool ? if they don?t explode.

ORLANDO, Fla. ? The Ramada on International Drive was partially evacuated and arrests were made after officials said a methamphetamine lab was discovered on Wednesday.
The Orange County Sheriff's Office said people were cooking meth in one of the rooms, right in the heart of the tourist district between Universal Studios and SeaWorld.
"I really don't know what's going on, and nobody's saying anything," said tourist Gerald Williams.
A woman called 911 early Wednesday morning to report a strong chemical odor coming from the room.
Authorities said the surrounding 12 rooms were evacuated while a hazmat crew tried to sort out what was inside.
