Job Summary: Reporting to the Environmental Affairs Manager, the individual who fills this position
will lead Yale’s comprehensive program for the management of regulated waste (i.e., radioactive, chemical, biomedical, universal, mixed and multihazardous). Seven technicians report to this position. As a workgroup, they oversee the safe and compliant generation,
minimization, collection, transport, accumulation, storage, treatment and disposal of Yale’s regulated waste. Yale’s Environmental Operations Manager oversees five less-than-90 day storage facilities, four radioactive waste facilities and an on-site autoclave-shredder
to treat biomedical waste. Yale holds radioactive waste for decay-in-storage, labpacks chemical waste and bulks waste solvents. For these activities, the workgroup is responsible for compliance with the various applicable laws as well as overall protection
of health and the environment. This position is expected to create a supportive, productive, team-oriented work environment that provides excellent customer service. As a member of EHS’ leadership team, the Environmental Operations Manager will promote collaboration
within EHS as well as the campus community, to further our proactive and service-oriented relationships with students, faculty and staff. It is vital that the successful candidate have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Required Qualifications:
Four or more years of progressively responsible regulatory hazardous waste program management experience at a research university, government research facility, medical research center
or a similar research/higher education work environment. Bachelor’s degree in a related scientific field (Master’s degree preferred). Excellent writing, speaking, training and technical skills are required.
