Cornell University Job Opening: Manager -- Laboratory Safety and Chemical Hygiene Officer

Description

With general oversight from the EHS Associate Director, the manager is responsible for Laboratory Safety programs for the Ithaca campus and outlying facilities, except for the Weill Medical College & Qatar. The primary function of the manager is to provide leadership and expertise in the development, administration and maintenance of programs for laboratory safety, with emphasis in chemical safety. S/he will develop, implement and manage policies, procedures and programs that promote a safe, responsible, healthful and compliant work environment for all faculty, staff and students. S/he will provide service, technical support and compliance guidance to the University and act as a liaison with the University and external agencies. Will serve as the Cornell University Chemical Hygiene Officer. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders on campus. The manager will have responsibilities that oversee and monitor programs, procedures, and policies that assure compliance for:
?Lab Safety Manual
?Chemical Hygiene Plan
?Training Programs for Research Safety with regard to chemical issues
?Lab Inspections for OSHA & EPA best practices compliance
?Hazard Assessment Signage Program (HASP)
?Inspections of Fume Hood, Emergency Showers and Eyewashes
?Laboratory ventilation
?Campus wide Laboratory Chemical inventory program
?Nanomaterial safety
?Oversee compliance with Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS)
?Support technical resolution for facility renovation and projects related to lab working areas, including design review
?Serve as a technical resource for researchers regardless of the situation

Core Qualifications

We need an experienced and proficient individual who has the interpersonal skills and desire to apply that expertise towards safety within an organization whose mission it is to promote a safe, responsible, healthful, and compliant living, learning and working environment, while facilitating research, teaching, and service doing exciting things. Specifically we are looking for the following:
= Master's Degree in fields of chemistry, safety, industrial hygiene, or closely related field.
= Certification in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, environmental compliance or closely related field preferred.
= Comfortable working with chemicals in a laboratory setting.
= Five years working experience in leading and supervising a safety related group with strong knowledge and experience in laboratory safety, hazardous materials response in a laboratory and research setting.
= Required training in Hazwoper, and working knowledge of implementing the Resource Conversation and Recovery Act (RCRA) operations.
= A demonstrated proactive, "Solution focused" approach to problem solving.
= Demonstrated use of Microsoft Suite products, at a minimum, Word, Excel and Power Point.
= Excellent communication skills both written and oral.
= Proven track record of completing work on time and within budget.
= Ability to work in a diverse culture and interact with all levels of university personnel
= EHS management systems experience such as ISO 14001 and OSHAS 18000, ANZI Z10 or VPP in academic organizations preferred.
= EHS Audit experience preferred.
= Experience working directly with external regulatory agencies with a strong working knowledge of applicable laboratory regulations (EPA, OSHA, NFPA, RCRA, DEC, etc.)
= A valid driver's license.
