Co-sponsored by Division of Chemistry of Special Library Association (SLA-DCHE) and Chemical Information Division of American Chemical Society (ACS-CINF), the Bi-society symposium will be on Monday, June 15. There are three sessions that day looking for speakers:
- one about instruction of safety information,
- one about safety information systems, and
- one about chemical safety information vendors.
More details are available below.
Please feel free to send abstracts or ideas to liye**At_Symbol_Here**umich.edu
Speakers will receive a one-day conference pass for the day they are speaking.
Thank you so much!

Bi-society symposium on Chemical Safety Information
Co-sponsored by Division of Chemistry of Special Library Association (SLA-DCHE) and Chemical Information Division of American Chemical Society (ACS-CINF)
7:30 a.m. ‰?? 9:30 a.m.
Laboratory safety has been vital to the success of research in both academia and industry. This breakfast / roundtable session will feature updates from vendors, publishers and agencies who provide chemical safety information as a part of their products, followed by roundtable discussions on current challenges and issues in supporting increasing demands on safety information in research laboratories.
10:00 a.m. ‰?? 11:30 a.m.
Exploring Safety Information Literacy: Towards a Safer Research Environment
Some recent laboratory incidents related to chemicals are motivating the research community to ensure researchers are well-educated and prepared to keep research labs safe and productive. Finding data and information relevant to laboratory safety, chemical hazardous handling and management as well as environmental health is an essential step towards a safer research lab. In this session, we will highlight these resources and strategies to deliver instruction to students and researchers. We will also hear from safety officers and educators about their needs for safety information in teaching. Together, we will explore how librarians can collaborate with other stakeholders, such as safety officers, government agencies and academic instructors, to educate researchers and create a safer research environment.
12:00 p.m. ‰?? 2:00 p.m.
Enriching research management system with point-of-need information delivery: case studies with laboratory safety information
Research management systems including electronic lab notebooks have revolutionized the workflow of many research labs in industry and academia. To ensure researchers stay aware of safety concerns for particular procedures they perform in labs, research management systems with chemical data and safety information integrated into the workflow need to be established. These systems can deliver the chemical hazardous handling and management information as researcher makes their research plans, especially when alarming substances or procedures are involved. This session will feature up-to-date efforts in this area from academia, corporate, and chemical vendors. The challenges in mapping out the landscape of chemical safety information, designing and integrating the information system, as well as supporting researchers adapting to the system will be examined. Audience will learn a breadth of solutions from chemical information specialists, cheminformaticians and software engineers.
