I was also bothered by the cotton sweatshirt sleeves.  Although it mentions the generation of sulfur dioxide, there is no mention of what that gas is or why a demonstrator should be concerned.

Other problems with the clip:

- the beaker was almost completely filled with sugar.  Not safe at all.

- no reference to just how hot it becomes.

- besides the obvious generation of carbon, the generation of water vapor, and the generation of sulfur dioxide (my tablet doesn't do subscripts!) part of what is given off (as a spray) is unreacted sulfuric acid.  A nasty surprise for anyone handling the carbon column.

- and of course, no reference to safety precautions or disposal.

A disappointment.

I was disappointed to see the person doing the demo having no covering on lower arms (such as a lab coat) and using the thin disposable gloves rather than something a bit thicker and going up the arm to cover wrist and lower arm.  The splash potential is not reflected here.  Nor is a cogent explanation of what is happening, including no mention SO2 evolution.

I have seen the reaction.  This is another demonstration that widely circulated.  I was a bit surprised to see where the video hit the "popular" press.  This video is on a bit larger scale than the one that typically gets circulated.  I have seen a smaller "snake" version that usually shows up around Halloween.

Of course anything that gives off SO2 should be done in a hood.  Besides that I should report that a colleague who did this as a demo rinsed the residue and disposed of it in a wastebasket--which later caught the paper on fire.  Surprise, surprise!  Guess it wasn't rinsed enough.
