EPA Toxics Release Inventory Program Moves to Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics

This week the EPA=E2=80™s Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) Program has joined the Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention. Previously, the TRI Program was housed in EPA's Office of Environmental Information. Please note that this is only an organizational change and does not impact TRI reporting requirements. The TRI Program, established in 1986 by Congress, is built around the principle that people have the right to know about the toxic chemicals being used in and released into our communities.

TRI tracks the management of more than 650 toxic chemicals that may pose a threat to human health and the environment. U.S. facilities in certain industry sectors must report annually how much of each chemical is released to the environment and/or managed through recycling, energy recovery and treatment. The information submitted by facilities is compiled in the Toxics Release Inventory.

TRI supports more informed decision-making by parents, homeowners, employees, government agencies, companies, and others. TRI is a unique program, incorporating data on air, water, land and pollution prevention, all in one place. Local and national-level TRI data are available in multiple online tools and through the annual TRI National Analysis report, which is EPA's summary and interpretation of the most recent data on toxic chemical releases and pollution prevention activities at more than 20,000 U.S. industrial facilities.
