Thanks to everyone who responded to my question about lab safety culture last week. By coincidence, over the weekend I listened to a podcast that combined two of my favorite things about Canada: the CBC's Spark program on the social impacts of emerging technologies and Gerald Wilde's concept of "risk homeostasis". I think that this idea, which Dr. Wilde develops most fully for driver's behaviors relative to traffic safety, is part of the risk culture picture that tends to be overlooked by more engineering-oriented approaches.
