67% of the ACS membership classify themselves as "industrial".
The Code of Conduct is aimed at all members of ACS, producers, researchers, teachers, regulators, etc and as such the wording must be rather general.
Within CHAS, we have been working for many years to make chemical safety =E2=80" in the broadest sense of the phrase - part of the thought and behavior of both the Society and its members. We have really made progress toward this goal in the past 10 years. The revised Code of Conduct is but one of many elements of achieving this.
We invite a robust discussion on our forum, and we will take the suggestions and thoughts back to those responsible for the wording in the Code.

It would be good to get a little bit more context on the intent of the statement. I don't think that chemical professionals generally develop sustainable products and processes that protect the health, safety, and prosperity of future generations. Much of what they produce is rather unhealthy. Do you mean the means by which they carry out their experiments should be done in a manner that protects them and the environment?

I suggest 'strive to do their work in ways that minimize negative effects on the environment.'
Nothing is completely 'safe' but we can always minimize the risk or potential hazard.

To all - I am currently in contact with CEPA and it looks like I will be given an opportunity to speak about this at the CEPA open meeting (for those of you who aren't versed in ACS Speak - this is the Committee on Economic and Professional Affairs.)
My person opinion is that it is too soon to bring this to Council Vote due to a number of actions that are currently occurring with regard to safety, and the overall value proposition for the ACS Strategic Plan.
A number of these activities are likely to be concluded prior to year end, and we need to have more input on aspects of the Code as these activities work through the organization.
I would like to have as much input as I can get prior to my meeting with CEPA to bring our concerns forward. If you have an opinion - please let me know.
