I can only give my perspective here, but having my headphones on during my lab work was integral to my ability to focus on it. The distractions actually came from people talking to me or other conversations I would overhear and become distracted by - the headphones took those away. It would have been impossible for me to work 12-16 hour days and stay focused on my experiments in the lab without my headphones.
