I have been through discussions on this issue in other schools, although the failures were at the 20+ year mark. For this reason, the problems were easy to blame on historic chemistry being too aggressive for the hardware. The in house mechanics were able to resolve many problems by disassembling the hood face and oiling the moving surfaces. But these were old enough hoods that there was no electronics involved in monitoring face velocities, control systems, etc. It may be a more complicated proposition with 21st century hoods.
