This will hopefully be a fun storyÉ. After more chatting online here is the more complete story that you might find interesting.

 

A past student's, now a post doc in molecular bio, dad was at a garage sale in the Denver area. The sale was held by an old fellow that used to work at Rocky Flats by Golden CO making A-bomb triggers apparently. And the garage was full of chemicals and odds and ends. I'm sure this is putting some of you on the edge of your seat.

 

The dad found two several pound "bars" encrusted with powder so it looked like it was decomposed and stamped with Gold V. It must not have looked like pure gold-I'm trying to get more info and pics because it sounds interesting/crazy. I'm not sure how they identified it but she is a very clever lady. They took it to jeweler said it is 24 and 14 karat gold in each bar respectively. And now they are assaying it.

 

Oh they paid $15 for the two bars.

 

I hope nothing dangerous was in the garage/dumped.

Jarral,

 

Unless you have a lot of it, the reclaim value is negligible.

If you send it to a recycler, they will have to perform an assay, and that will probably use up your sample.

 

You may, though, be able to return it to the manufacturer.

I have a sample of gold pentafluoride found by group. Does anyone have suggestions for recycling or reclaiming the gold and safety?
