I truly believe the RAMP paradigm to be a clear, step-by-step methodology, and teach it whenever I can. It breaks down the process into manageable steps, and thus reduces the hurdles to completing an experimental safety assessment.  It's a great idea to use a short video to teach the RAMP concept.  That being said, I have a couple of changes I would like to see made to the video:

I prefer to use the term "hazard identification" over "hazard assessment".  Or, to use the RAMP terminology, the equally apt "hazard recognition".  These preferred terms simply describes the process better to the learner.

In the video, beginning at 00:46, the narrator describes the risk assessment as a priority list of the things that could go wrong (presumably ranked on the basis of likelihood and severity of the consequences), however, the animation shows the risk assessment as list of mitigations (in red letters). Doing that conflates the two steps of assessing risk and minimizing or mitigating the possible consequencesÑsomething that a seasoned safety professional could do with little effort, but the beginner would benefit from distinguishing the two steps.

With the support of the ACS's Innovative Project Grant program for technical divisions, DCHAS has been working with Timothy Gallagher of the University of Bristol and a video artist to develop a short video on the the topic of laboratory risk assessments and maintaining situational awareness as work proceeds. I'd appreciate any comments or questions DCHAS members have about the video by Thursday of this week.

Let me know if you have any questions about this.
