I currently work at a manufacturing facility where a substantial amount of GC vials are used. I have the Lab Dept empty the solvent content vials into a Haz Waste collection can and dispose of it with the rest of our Haz Waste. It doesn't
take that long to empty out the vials, as long as you don't wait until you have an unmanageable amount. Good luck Elizabeth!

In my last position in a small start up biotech I wore several hats, including CHO. We created a separate waste stream for these types of vials. We placed them 5 gallon DOT rated buckets and shipped them out through our waste vender with
our other hazardous waste. No one wanted to bother with the tedious tack of uncapping them and emptying the small amount in a separate waste container. Good luck with your new position!

I have been CHO for about a year, so still pretty new.
One of the questions that has come up is What is the best practice for disposing of GC/MS vials after they have been used. I was thinking you would uncap them add the excess sample to a hazardous waste bottle. But the faculty members tell
me they don't have to remove that leftover 1-2ml of sample and solvent and they just put the vials into broken glass even if they are still half full with solvent.
