Officials have released an alert to Nelson County residents following an ammonia leak Sunday afternoon.

According to fire officials, an ammonia leak at a factory in Bardstown forced nearby businesses to evacuate. Crews responded to the scene on Wilson Parkway around 4 p.m. Sunday. The leak took about two hours to contain.

Jefferson County hazmat crews also responded to the scene to provide assistance. Authorities said about 5,000 gallons of the chemical was spilled.

Nelson County officials have issued an alert for residents within a 1-mile radius of Wilson Parkway. They are asked to go indoors, close doors and windows and turn off their air conditioning units as a result of the leak.

An explosion and fire at a chemical products company Saturday prompted evacuations of nearby businesses while the Santa Clara Fire Department worked to contain the blaze.

The fire was reported about 4:30 p.m. at Air Products and Chemicals Inc. near the 1500 block of Norman Avenue, where crews found multiple hydrogen tanker trucks on fire in the facility yard.

Neighboring businesses in a two-block radius were asked to evacuate or shelter-in-place for about two hours.

Ladder trucks were deployed and the fire was reported extinguished at 5:40 p.m.

"Additional air sampling and thermal imaging was conducted to ensure air quality, and the hydrogen, which is not visible when burning in the daytime, did not pose a threat," the department said in a release.

ELKHART, Ind. ‰?? The Elkhart Fire Department was dispatched to a fire alarm that was set off at Altec Engineering in Elkhart Friday around 230 p.m.

Upon arrival, fire crews found heavy smoke throughout the building.

Once EFD made entry, they found a fire inside a trash hopper and up the east wall and the ceiling.

The flames were quickly extinguished. The building took considerable time to clear the smoke due to the size of the building.

The trash hopper contained fiberglass resins that caused a chemical reaction and combustion, starting the contents on fire and burning the wall up to the ceiling.

The sprinkler system was activated and contained the fire until EFD arrived

A new memorial to remember the 28 people killed in a chemical explosion 45 years ago has been unveiled at a service.

Dozens of others were injured when the blast happened at the Nypro chemical plant at Flixborough, Scunthorpe on 1 June, 1974.

A memorial area at All Saints Church in the town has been revamped.

Jeremy Jolley, from the church, described the explosion as "the darkest day in Scunthorpe's history".

As well as the 28 deaths, 36 people were seriously injured out of a total of 72 people on the site.

The plant produced caprolactam, a raw material for Nylon 6 that is used in the manufacture of clothing, carpets, fishing nets and ropes.

WORLD'S RIVERS LOADED WITH ANTIBIOTICS WASTE: STUDY

Rivers worldwide are polluted with antibiotics that exceed environmental safety thresholds by up to 300 times, according to research.

Scientists found one or more common antibiotics in two-thirds of 711 samples taken from rivers in 72 countries, they told a meeting of environmental toxicologists in Helsinki.

In dozens of locations, concentrations of the drugs used to fight off bacterial infection in people and livestock exceeded safety levels set by the AMR Industry Alliance, a grouping of more than 100 biotech and pharmaceutical companies.

Ciprofloxacin, a frontline treatment for intestinal and urinary tract infections, surpassed the industry threshold at 51 of the sites tested.

At one location in Bangladesh, concentrations of another widely used antibiotic, metronidazole, were 300 times above the limit, the researchers said.

NEW CONCERNS RAISED FOR CHEMICAL SAFETY IN CHINA

BEIJING ‰?? March of this year saw a fatal explosion rip through a factory run by Jiangsu Tianjiayi Chemical Co. Ltd (JTC), a company which produces m-phenylenediamine alongside a range of other key intermediaries in Yancheng, China, that are used in the textile dye industry ‰?? among other sectors.

The wider context of the JTC explosion, a series of other safety and environmental accidents in recent years, plus records of illegal practices have now prompted environmental NGO Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs (IPE) to speak out regarding a ‰??critical situation‰?? in the Chinese chemical industry.

A situation that impacts on the supply of chemicals to the textile sector, which has seen increased price volatility in an already disrupted market since the accident two months ago. And a situation that also has big implications for safety in the textile dye and chemicals industry as a whole.

Members of the IPE team based in Beijing have told Ecotextile News they‰??ve been working hard behind the scenes to bring about a change to the practices shown by Chinese chemical suppliers, but a lack of cooperation and progress means the situation has now reached an impasse whereby the NGO says it being forced to make its safety concerns public through a new report.

CHON BURI: Authorities estimate the cost of the damages from the cargo ship explosion at Laem Chabang port last Saturday to reach at least 100 million baht, as calls mount for better monitoring of freighters loaded with toxic chemicals.

There were "many alleged irregularities" especially regarding the vessel's docking procedure as well as how the shipping containers burst, leading to toxic smoke spewing into the air, Deputy Transport Minister Pailin Chuchottaworn said on Friday.

All in all, "this is a lesson for the nation on ways to deal with its major sea ports", he said.

Better safety measures are needed as the government is pushing ahead with its third phase development plan for Laem Chabang port as part of its ambitious flagship Eastern Economic Corridor, or EEC, scheme, Mr Pailin added.
