Dear Act4Chemistry Members,
The Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) provides a valuable service to the chemistry community by investigating chemical accidents, finding root causes, and issuing recommendations to minimize the chances of an accident recurring. The CSB has five board members, including one chair, who decide when to deploy investigators, vote on final accident report releases, and engage in outreach with communities and groups impacted by accidents. Right now, CSB has only one Senate-confirmed member. However, her term ends in August 2020. Once she leaves there will be no board members remaining. Last September, the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works unanimously recommended that Dr. Katherine Lemos be confirmed as the new chair of CSB. Unfortunately, her confirmation vote has not yet happened.
For the sake of continuity at CSB, ACS is asking you to call your Senators on Wednesday, February 12th to make your voice heard. Request that they support the confirmation of Dr. Lemos when it comes to the floor for a vote to ensure that CSB can continue to carry out its important duty. You should also encourage your Senators to work with the Administration and confirm additional members to the CSB, including a candidate with expertise in chemistry, to bring the board back to full strength.
NOTE: Once the system identifies your Senators, you can click on the "Call Me" button. The System will contact you at the phone number you provided, and a recording will provide instructions. Unfortunately, this call to action will not work for localities without U.S. Senate representation (i.e., District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, etc).

Warm Regards,
Karen Garcia |
