WRENTHAM, MA ‰?? Hazmat crews responded to the water plant in Wrentham where two employees received chemical burns ‰?? including a 40-year-old employee who was splashed in the face and eyes with the chemical potassium hydroxide ‰?? Tuesday morning.

Wrentham Fire Chief Antonio Marino said emergency service crews responded to the Tier 1 incident at the plant on Franklin Street about 9:20 a.m. Marino said two workers, ages 40 and 23, received non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment.

Both were wearing eye protection at a time.

Marino said the preliminary investigation determined the employees were conducting routine maintenance when a pressurized hose began to leak. The cause of the leak is under investigation.

One person was killed and seven others injured after a tanker truck exploded in Incheon City on Tuesday.

The powerful explosion occurred at around 8:51 p.m. at a chemical factory in western Incheon while hydrogen peroxide was being loaded into the truck.

Seven workers were injured and taken to the hospital for treatment, while one was found dead early on Wednesday.

The explosion did not cause a fire, but damaged parts of the building and nearby factories.

Fire authorities mobilized some 50 fire trucks and equipment along with more than 140 people to contain the explosion. They along with the police plan to conduct a joint inspection of the site on Wednesday to find out the exact cause.

In recent years, immersive technology tools have burgeoned. After the release of the affordable Oculus Go headset and the Merge Cube, there has been increasing use of virtual, augmented, and extended reality (VR, AR, XR) in classrooms. Of significance to chemistry educators are the virtual lab simulations developed by Labster and HoloLab Champions and the VR app Nanome, which can be used to virtually manipulate chemicals and proteins. So far, however, there are no commercially developed products that address the transfer of chemicals and contaminants during experiments or procedures that require gloves. Herein, we discuss how VR can be used as an active learning approach to lab safety about correct glove hygiene. The work is the result of a collaboration among chemistry, computer science, and library faculty on a VR instructional module on glove hygiene. This experience is useful to bring a realistic and interactive laboratory experience to students who may have limited expe!
rience in a laboratory setting. Additionally, the project explores how to optimally use the academic library space to deploy the VR module to a large number of student users. Despite shortcomings we encountered in the first phase of development, we believe that, with technological improvements, there is significant potential for a virtual reality instructional environment that teaches glove hygiene when there may be limited access to physical laboratories.

PROCESS SAFETY IN THE PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY: A SELECTION OF ILLUSTRATIVE CASE STUDIES

Awareness of best safety practices in the industrial sector will allow students in chemistry and chemical engineering programs to apply these approaches to their own safety assessments. Process safety is a critical function within the pharmaceutical industry to ensure safety when performing reactions. An introduction to process safety and a series of case studies illustrating how safety is routinely considered within the pharmaceutical industry is presented. The concepts presented herein are applicable to multiple industries, academic research, and chemical reactions conducted on all scales. The case studies include examples where a synthesis was redesigned to afford a triazole intermediate without forming potentially explosive byproducts, an exothermic reaction was controlled by understanding the heat output with time and developing a portion-wise addition procedure, and a reaction that displayed extremely fast gas evolution was managed by using an alternative solvent and c!
ontrolling the rate of reagent addition.

Several fire departments were called to a fire in a warehouse at the Alchemix Corporation chemical plant in College Park, GA last Friday afternoon, local news organizations reported.

‰??Alchemix would like to inform that a fire ain its production facility took place this Friday, July 17th, at around 4:15 pm. The fire has been contained and there are no victims,‰?? the company said in a statement on its website. ‰??The causes of the fire are already under investigation and Alchemix is cooperating with authorities.‰??

Part of a roadway near the facility was temporarily closed during the incident, news broadcaster WXIA said. Five fire departments reported to the incident.

A toxic chemical leaked at a factory in the southeastern city Gumi on Tuesday, causing seven workers to be taken to the hospital.

The leak reportedly occurred at around 1:47 a.m. at the plant of KEC, a semiconductor manufacturer, in the city in North Gyeongsang Province.

The workers were reportedly not in critical condition.

The toxic chemical, trichlorosilane, is a colorless liquid that smells of hydrogen chloride and can cause breathing difficulties, headaches and dizziness if inhaled.

Fire authorities and municipal officials went to the scene to prevent further leakage and had the situation under control by 3:22 a.m. An investigation is under way to determine the scope and cause of the leak.

Shortly after 4 p.m. Specialty Steel, 31610 W. 8 Mile Rd., reported close to 500 gallons of oil was burning in a large steel treating furnace. According to a city press release, more than 20 firefighters from all five Farmington Hills fire stations responded. Because it‰??s dangerous to use water on an oil fire, they turned to dry chemical fire extinguishers, which worked well but quickly ran out.

Command staff contacted the Detroit Metro Airport Fire Department for an Aircraft Rescue Fire Truck, which carries several thousand gallons of water and firefighting foam. Most importantly, it also carries 500 pounds of Purple-K, a dry chemical that is highly effective in fighting oil fires.

Shortly after Truck #7 of the Metro Airport firefighting fleet arrived, a team of firefighters from both departments applied Purple-K into the oil vat and extinguished the fire by 6 p.m., with no injuries to employees or firefighters.

ANTI-TERRORISM CHEMICAL SAFETY BILL HEADS FOR TRUMP UNDER CLOUD

A bipartisan bill extending the Chemical Facility Anti-terrorism Standards program cleared the U.S. House Monday and now heads to President Donald Trump‰??s desk.

Created in 2007, the program is intended to heighten security practices at chemical plants subject to U.S. Department of Homeland Security oversight, with the objective of keeping more than 300 substances out of the hands of terrorists.

But five months ago, the Trump administration eliminated CFATS‰?? funding in its proposed fiscal year 2021 budget, casting doubt on the future of the program managed by the DHS Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.
