WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (WFLA) ‰?? A chemical spill forced the evacuation of the Borden Dairy Company in Winter Haven Wednesday morning, officials said.

Hazmat crews were called to the dairy supplier located at 1000 6th Street SW at approximately 5:40 a.m. Workers were evacuated, but there were no evacuations in the surrounding areas.

Police said one employee was exposed to the chemical, but refused medical treatment. No other injuries or illnesses were reported.

Police suspect the chemical may be a cleaning solution, but the nature of the solution is still being determined.

Two 14-year-olds were injured in when a vehicle carrying a tank of explosive chemicals blew up at at Plainfield Central High School, police said,

Shortly after 2 a.m. on Tuesday, police officers and firefighters received numerous calls about a loud explosion in the area of the high school at 24120 W. Fort Briggs Drive, according to a news release from Plainfield police Cmdr. Anthony Novak.

Emergency crews arrived on the scene and found a 2015 Ford Focus ‰??fully engulfed in fire‰?? in the south parking lot of the school, police said.

Two 14-year-old males were the victims in the incident,

They indicated they had left their homes without permission, and one had taken his father‰??s work vehicle, police said.

While the two teens were driving around, they heard a ‰??hissing sound‰?? coming from somewhere in the vehicle, police said. The teens pulled into the south parking lot of the high school and investigated the source of the noise.

That‰??s when an explosion occurred, police said.

HANDLING OF AIR-SENSITIVE AND MOISTURE-SENSITIVE REAGENTS IN AN UNDERGRADUATE CHEMISTRY LABORATORY: THE IMPORTANCE OF THE SYRINGE

A relatively large number of organic and inorganic chemistry reagents are air- or moisture-sensitive, and undergraduate students should be trained in their use. When handling such reagents, it is important to select the correct syringe and to use that syringe correctly. We have found that the best syringe for use in an undergraduate setting is a fully plastic polypropylene (PP) Luer lock syringe. While generally safe, such a syringe should be treated as a single-use syringe. Repeated exposure to an organic solvent causes progressively more resistance to the movement of the plunger, or its complete freeze. Thus, when drawing in a volume of liquid that is close to the capacity of the syringe, the plunger could be inadvertently pulled out causing a spill.

3M TO CUT PFAS RELEASES FROM ALABAMA PLANT

3M will implement tighter controls to curb the release of fluorochemicals from its factory in Decatur, Alabama, under a consent order between the company and the state. The company will also run toxicity studies on five per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) it manufactures.

The order, which involves no monetary penalty unless 3M fails to meet its terms, is focused on dozens of PFAS entering water, air, and soil from the plant. It stems from 3M‰??s 2019 disclosure that the facility, which manufactures specialty chemicals, polymers, energy-efficient window films, and plastics, was illegally discharging PFAS into the Tennessee River. The legal deal, completed July 24, requires 3M to beef up its wastewater treatment to filter out PFAS before the water is discharged into the river.

SURPRISE, Ariz. ‰?? A thermal chain-reaction caused by a faulty battery system triggered the explosion that injured eight firefighters in Surprise last year, according to a report released Monday by the Arizona Public Service Company.

Crews responded to 911 calls of unusual smoke coming from an APS facility near Deer Valley Road and Grand Avenue on April 9, 2019.

Eight firefighters were injured in the explosion near Deer Valley Road and Grand Avenue, according to a spokesperson for the Surprise Fire Department.

Investigators said that an explosion erupted as soon as Peoria Fire-Medical Department's hazmat team opened the door of the facility to investigate.

TRUCK CARRYING CHEMICAL CATCHES FIRE

The driver and cleaner of a truck (HP-71-4900) had a miraculous escape when the vehicle‰??s engine, cabin and chemical drums loaded in it caught fire near the apple mandi in the Parwanoo area today.

The truck, on its way to Parwanoo from Uttarakhand, was carrying 20 drums of an inflammable chemical. A team of fire staff managed to douse the fire and save the truck from further damage.

Truck driven Hussan Pal, a Kala Amb resident, and cleaner Amit Kumar managed to escape unhurt. However, a loss of around Rs 2.5 lakh was reported due to the fire, whose cause is yet to be ascertained, said police sources.

An explosion accident occurred when synthesizing Zn(II)-2,9,16,23-tetracarboxyphthalocyanine from trimellitic anhydride, urea, and zinc acetate. In this work, we discuss the direct causes of this explosion by investigating the thermal stability of the reaction with differential scanning calorimetry. Furthermore, four factors leading to explosions in closed systems have been summarized, including vessel damage, system volume reduction, increasing temperature, and gas generation. Finally, we propose technical and managerial measures for preventing explosions in a closed system, aiming to help scientific researchers prevent potential explosion accidents in academic laboratories.

Crystalline silica is a basic component of soil, sand, granite, and many other minerals. All forms of crystalline silica can be inhaled when broken into dust-size particles through chipping, cutting, drilling or grinding objects. Inhaling respirable crystalline silica dust particles can cause fibrosis of the lungs and therefore has been classified as a human lung carcinogen.
